July 5, 2010Patrick Dickerson said it best…he described Phoenix as "walking on the Sun" and he's right. The Greater Phoenix Swing Dance Club held its' 29th annual 4th of July Convention. As one of the biggest clubs in the nation, GPSDC has had a large membership for many years. Cheryl Sullivan, President of the club put together a great staff and tackled the task of hosting the event for the first time. I must admit she did a wonderful job for a first timer. To be thrown in as the event director for one of the longest running WCS events is no easy task, and although there were a few foibles, they were minimal and quickly corrected. Congratulations Cheryl on putting together a great weekend. That goes for the rest of the board and the volunteers as well. I had a great time, despite the behavior of some "pros" during the Champions Strictly Swing. Some people believe "anything goes" means you don't have to do WCS and can run around the ballroom, behind the judges, and even fall on the ground. This is not entertainment in my opinion, but a crass display of lack of respect for the event, the attendees, and the dance itself. Lord knows I've made mistakes, and that I've pushed rules in my time, but to have that degree of disrespect for everyone around them, including their own friends, is something I find disgusting. The saddest part in all of this is the incredible talent these people possess. They have no need to go to such extremes and don't seem to grasp that their dance ability could stand on its own…without the need for all the "clowning" and making fun of literally everyone that has come before them. If they would only see that they don't have the need to do this. Thank you to Cheryl, Bess, and the rest of the club for a wonderful weekend. Despite the behavior of a few bad apples, I had a great time. It was great to see my old friends Rudy Paaz, Don and Rosalie Dressler, Mike Gallo, Danny and Joanie Gallichio and the rest of the Phoenix regulars. If you're ever in Phoenix, you owe it to yourself to check out the Greater Phoenix Swing Dance Club.

June 29, 2010Man, is this ever a long flight…but London was worth it. I went to London to visit Samantha and teach an intensive put together by Mike Rosa. I must say he's come a long way since I met him. He's now cranking out students with good solid social WCS basics, a rarity these days. Mike started his lessons just over a year ago, and in that time he's managed to grow to 5 classes per week. That in itself says something a out the methods he's using. The intensive was held just west of London in Bicester at the Rugby Club. We had a great group for the intensive and wonderful turnout both Friday and Saturday for the social dances. It was great to see Samantha doing well and making a good name for herself in the UK. I'm extremely interested in heading back to Europe on a regular basis, perhaps even mainland Europe (hint hint if you know anyone have them contact me please) at least once per year. It was great to see Pete and Eva, and I wish Eva a very speedy recovery with her Achilles injury. It was also great to see Paul Buckley who first sponsored my trip to the UK several years ago. Thanks Mike for putting together a great extended weekend and allowing me to chance to come play across the pond once again.

June 13, 2010A few years ago I was asked by the Texas Classic Push Club in Dallas/Fort Worth if I would be willing to help them set up group lessons. At the time I was still dance director of the Southwest Whip Club of Houston, a position I held for 18 years before they let me go. Anyhow, Robin McBride asked if I could help them set up a lesson plan as they were interested in starting tiered group lessons in the DFW area. I have known Robin for many years and consider her to be a very close friend. Moreover, TCPC has a great many members that I've known for years including Cher Peadon, Brent and Kellese Key, Robert Nelson, Adel Husband, Tom and Leslie Daniel, and Dave and Judy Megaffin to name a few. I packed up and traveled to Robin's home several times over the following month and I helped them set a curriculum along with helping to train the teachers for the classes. I was even there the very first night they held lessons to help them set up registration and taught the very first advanced class. This was years ago…fast forward to this weekend. Dave Megaffin called to tell me they wanted to throw a party in my honor to say "thank you" for helping them set up their lessons. I taught a workshop on Friday evening and the party that followed was an absolute BLAST! I say a great many friends…family really, throughout the course of the evening. To my surprise, they intended a roast in my honor. In attendance and speaking were Brent Key, Kellese Key, Barry Jones, Michelle Bogard, Claudia Buhrig, Cher Peadon, Terry Rippa (Holy Cow even Rippa came out), Bill Caffy, Steve Giles, and of course the one and only Gary Long as Master of Ceremonies. Boy did I ever have a great time. The fact that my girl Stephanie and my two children were there made it all the more wonderful. Many, many thanks to Dave Megaffin and the rest of TCPC for putting together such a memorable evening. Thank you all so much for going to all that effort. I will always be there to help you guys in any way I can. To anyone in the area, check out TCPC's Wednesday night lessons at Sandunga Dance Studio.

June 6, 2010One of my absolute favorite places to go is…wait for it…New Jersey. Why, do you ask? Because not only is John Lindo one of my favorite people in my industry, but also because his inner circle of friends is one of the nicest set of individuals you'll ever find on this circuit. Gotham Swing Club brought me in to the Big Apple for a day of workshops followed be a dance in the evening at 412. Great crowds at the classes followed by a record breaking number of people at Gotham's monthly dance (over 150 people) made for a rockin' night at the studio. I hadn't spun in some time, and the powers that be asked me to lean on the Texas sound for my music selections. All I can say is the floor was full all night despite playing over 80% "Blues" and "Swing" music all night. Let that be a lesson to people that say no one wants or enjoys the sound that made this dance. I used to go to NYC every 6 weeks of so back in the early 90's when the scene was just starting. They were glorious days, with North River Bar leading the way. It was great to see old familiar faces all come out as well…Anthony DeRosa (dam you grew up…looking good my friend), Steve Neeren (Go Philly) Eddie Sanabria (from WAY back and the New York Swing Dance Society), Donna Roesel (DONNIE D. RADUMO) and of course Mr. John Festa. Thanks to John Lindo for setting up a whirlwind day on Saturday followed by a great workshop/dance on Sunday at Rockaway. Thanks to "the gang" for making me feel like I'm one of them…it's worth MUCH more to me than you'll ever realize. If you're ever in NYC/Newark you really should make it a point to try and hit some Gotham Swing Club function. You'd be hard pressed finding a friendlier group of people. May 31, 2010One of the worst things about this business on a professional level is the complaints you receive when working an event. Don't get me wrong, patrons rarely complain if you do your job right...that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the "pro's" that work events with you. Primadonna's tend to be one of the biggest reasons why event directors don't look forward to their own event. People showing up late for competitions, running into the ballroom late with laptop in hand (they haven't even burned a CD for their music) then not even dressing up for the awards. Worse yet, "pro's" dressing so badly in order to "make a statement" when in fact they're only showing their immaturity. Other "pro's" are getting paid to attend the event, yet they only show up in the ballroom when they're supposed to be judging, teaching, or competing. Sure, you may see them social dance at 4am once they're nice and "lubricated" but otherwise they can't be bothered to socialize with the paying customers of a weekend. These individuals are the single biggest reason event directors can't enjoy their own event. After time, one tends to forget all of the wonderful things that happen at an event because they get buried under a mountain of complaining and whining from a few of the paid "pro's". I say all of this because I myself had forgotten some of the truly wonderful things that have happened at USA Grand Nationals over the last 16 years. Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee have officially stepped down as the lead directors of this amazing event. Over the weekend, clips were played of previous years and a flood of memories came back for me. I began to remember all of the truly special people that are no longer with us who used to attend Grand Nationals. Truman…Dewey…Shad…Showdog…Chicken. I miss you guys. We all miss you. I also saw clips of myself dancing and for a brief moment I remembered the rush of competition and performing. You see it was Charlie who got me out of retirement for the very first Grand Nationals. I have to thank both Charlie and Jackie for doing that as it allowed me to live some really great moments on the dance floor that otherwise wouldn't have happened. I would like to thank all of the ladies that danced with me over the years at Grand Nationals. Carmen, MaryAnn, Sylvia, Blake, Samantha…thank you for the wonderful memories. I wish the new directors (Michael and LeAnn Norris) the absolute best of luck with this event. Grand Nationals changed the face of our dance community and I am confident that it will continue to do so with these two young, eager, respectful event directors. To Charlie and Jackie, I first thank you for over 20 years of friendship. I have shown my best and my worst at Grand Nationals, yet you have never waivered in your friendship and always believed and trusted in me to drive your event from the podium. You two changed the dance in a very positive way…something very few people can say today. Thank you for the Grand Nationals.

May 16, 2010Back up north this weekend to the great town of Boise, Idaho. Jennifer Babione, Penni Hale, and the rest of the gang with the High Desert Swing Dance Club really go all out to make you feel comfortable when you are in town. I arrived late due to plane delays (it always happens a few times each year when you travel as much as I do) and wasn't able to get in my private lessons for the day. However, the lovely Kathleen threw a party Friday night and I was able to make the party, albeit a bit late. I can now say that I've danced Two Step through a kitchen and around a stairway…can you say that? I think not! Saturday began with a couple of lessons followed by 4 workshops then another lesson before a quick dinner (that restaurant rocked) then back to the hall for the evening dance. I'm happy to say I didn't turn down a single lady that asked me to dance, but I was pretty worn out by the end. Sunday started the same way with a couple of private lessons followed by 4 more workshops (Hustle this time) and two more privates at the end. It was a long weekend, but well worth it with wonderful company. The pleasant surprise for the weekend was the fact that David Hassis from Denver was in town visiting Thomas and Jennifer. I've known David for several years, and it was great getting to know him a bit better. I can whole-heartedly recommend contacting the club if you're ever in Boise…you'd be hard pressed to find a more welcoming group of dancers. Thomas…break on 2!

May 9, 2010I've known Dani Canziani for about 20 years now. She and the rest of BLSDC (Biggest Little Swing Dance Club - pronounced "balisdic" to those in the know) have a great group of people in Reno. I was fortunate enough to come back for my second year of workshops with the club along with a dance on Saturday night. We had 3 workshops on the afternoon followed by a great Mexican dinner then back to dancing until about 11:30. After that, we went across the parking lot to the Polo lounge where we stayed and made fools of ourselves until about 1:30am. For some reason, this tends to happen whenever Dani and I are together. She blames me of course for everything although I've yet to see the gun I'm holding to her head forcing her into all of her actions. It was great to see Jeffrey, Mark, Mark and Kim, Martin and Susan, and the rest of the gang in Reno. If you're ever in the Biggest Little City, please be sure to check out BLSDC and the great membership it has. I'm sure they'll welcome you with open arms just like they did for me.

May 2, 2010Several years ago I was talking to Ken Mercik about the possibility of his hosting a dance event. Not a typical weekend, but one that had social dancing at night yet still offered competitions for those that were interested. The result was Swingin Into Spring which just ended. I'm seriously starting to like regional events once again. There's something to be said about weekends without drama with a limited staff of professionals who are actually professional and show up on time. My hat's off to my fellow staff members this past weekend. Virtually every one of them were always on time, spent plenty of time with the patrons, and were generally available throughout the weekend. Special props to Ken's dance team for putting the routine on the floor despite all the adversity over the last few months. Anne Fleming is looking beautiful! Thanks Ken for a great weekend. Thanks to all the ladies who danced with me, and my apologies to those I didn't get a chance to dance with…next time I hope! Finally, a very special thanks to MaryAnn Nunez for allowing me to teach a workshop with her…I had a blast and I'm always amazed by your talent. She's the best of the best! Ken's crowd is very welcoming, and if you're ever interested in attending a weekend that's casual yet offers competitions (ONLY DURING THE DAY) with nothing but social dancing starting no later than 9pm every night, you owe it to yourself to check out this event next year. Ken's moved to a great hotel in downtown Hartford and the crowd responded by showing up in record numbers. I'm looking forward to coming back in October for workshops and Enfield, and it looks like we'll be doing another road trip to New Hampshire and/or Maine too. Check out the websites for full details.

April 19, 2010MAN I LOVE CURLING!!! I know, most people can't stand it, but I enjoy it. I profess to be the 4 time Cuban National Curling Champion, and continue to be until someone says differently! I was in Calgary over the weekend for the Calgary Dance Stampede. Keith and Jena Armbruster put together a top notch event within one of the more welcoming dance communities I've encountered over the years. Canada has always been very welcoming when I've visited, and this was certainly no exception. Special thanks to Richard and Leslie for hosting the hospitality room above and beyond the normal hours so that we could hang out and visit in the room til the wee hours. I was lucky to see my two oldest Canadian friends…Doug and Doug. Although it sounds like some kind of joke, it's actually true! It was great to sit and visit with both of them, although the visits were too short as always. Thank you to everyone at the event for making me feel so welcome, and I look very forward to coming back to the Great White North next year! By the way, Jennifer Jeffries is full of it…she has had her name on the curling trophy the last two years but she never said the names for the trophy are randomly drawn at the end of the evening. She lost both of her matches. I won one of mine. I WON! That is all…

April 11, 2010Maria Cirino is truly one of the rare people that really keeps the dance alive. She occupies her spare time (ha!) with not one but two dance clubs, two dance teams, classes, private lessons, and travels to help other clubs put on events on top of doing an amazing job with her own event, Swing Niagara. Keep in mind, she still has a 9 to 5 job and somehow she manages to keep all of this rolling. If you live in Northern New York, you definitely owe Maria Cirino a debt of gratitude for making dance what it is in this area. I also have to thank Kris Caspari for doing all of the work putting the event together…it was her first time and she did a great job! Mary Ellen was there as well making sure everything with the Syracuse Swing Dance Society was taken care of. We had a Canadian invasion from Toronto as well as a large contingent from Ottowa. It was great to see Shelley and Dave's little Liam over the weekend as well! I can't wait to get back for Swing Niagara in September. Thanks to everyone for a great weekend!

April 4, 2010I'm on the first flight home in order to spend Easter with my boys! This past weekend was the annual Seattle Easter Swing convention. I hadn't been here in two years, and it's grown! Thursday night we had a HUGE crowd for the early bird dance, and it was nice to see my friends from the Northwest. Christian Jones is still a blast to hang with, and Jim Minty still knows how to throw a good party. Trula kept Jim in line (she's the only one that can I think…man is he big) throughout the weekend, and everything seemed to go off without a hitch. Thanks to Jim and the rest of the club for an outstanding weekend, and I hope to see you guys soon! By the way, I have a crush on Rose Brown…

March 28, 2010Some people really make an impression in your life. Many times it's completely overwhelming in its simplicity. I have to say how much I admire Tony and Debi Dillow. They have a beautiful family, great friends, and share their love of live and dancing with anyone they can. In a time where it isn't fashionable to be old fashioned, the Dillows have managed to do it, and do it right. I don't know how they do it, but they embrace current trends while fiercely adhering to what's right. Character isn't easy, at least not good character. I admire the Dillows. Thanks to Debi and Tony for a great weekend, and thanks to the Jacksonville dance community for a weekend full of good times and plenty of good dances. Florida is coming on strong…there are already plenty of good dancers in the area and it's only going to get better. If you're ever in the Jacksonville area, be sure to drop in on Debi's classes or their monthly dance and you'll see for yourself what a warm reception is all about…and great dancing to boot!

March 21, 2010It takes a lot to have a successful event. It takes even more to have a successful event for several years. Bill Robinson and Linda Hembree have now had a successful event for 20 years! Peach State C&W Festival is one of the few UCWDC events I still attend. I think his secret is keeping the event country. Too many other C&W events these days concentrate almost entirely on WCS. While Peach State has a dedicated WCS room, it also keeps the main ballroom full of country. Plenty of line dancing is also present throughout the weekend. Bill and Linda bring in top level teachers from all three styles, and it pays off with a HUGE crowd. Special attention is also paid to social dancing, as this is one of the few events to still try to maintain a large amount of social dancing. Add a great volunteer staff and you have the makings of a successful weekend. Special props go out to my co-MC Jennifer Jeffries. Your butt plant during the dinner show was not only unexpected, but the high point (no pun intended) of my weekend. I will be making it a point to find that video and get it to Chicagoland later this year. This had to be one of the better "dinner" shows in the past few years…boy did we laugh! Thanks to Bill and Linda for another wonderful weekend, and I look VERY forward to next year.

March 17, 2010SPRING BREAK was a blast! I went to visit one of my oldest friends in New Mexico. My boys and his boys are roughly the same age, and aside from an 11 hour car ride it was a great time. In actuality, even the car ride wasn't so bad. A bit of advice, stay away from the Subway in Fort Stockton, Texas…huge lines, and it was arguably the worst sandwich I've ever had at a Subway. We did some snow skiing and the trip ended all too quickly. I miss that guy and I wish he lived closer…

March 7, 2010Some weekends are easier than others. Generally speaking, intensive weekends are harder. I really focus on doing my best to teach dance concepts rather than patterns. I've been teaching intensives now going on 7 years. During the weekend I don't hold anything back. I give the same concepts that I've taught National Champions…some of which are now teaching their own intensives, go figure. I guess imitation really is the sincerest form of flattery. The CT intensive is dear to me…Ken Mercik was the first guy to take a chance on the intensive. I still remember the first one almost as if it were yesterday. It was a turning point in my teaching career, it really was. For the first time, I tried to "give back" the dance to more than one person at a time. I'm very pleased with how the intensive has matured and changed over the years since it was started. One of my favorite things about intensives are the "A-HA" moments that people have throughout the weekend. There were more than a few this time, and I love it when the attendees see the dance as something approachable rather than the impossible achievement many teachers try to make it out to be. Thanks to Ken for a great weekend. Thanks to the ladies I danced with over the weekend, especially Nina. It was great getting to know you and Morry a bit better. You two keep going, you're much better than you think…

February 28, 2010STACIE VAINIUNAS ROCKS!!! It's always refreshing to see people advance their dancing. It's even better to see someone "get it" and Stacie has really, really gotten it. This weekend my "Groupie" Jess Acker put workshops together in Sioux City and we drew people from Kansas City, Omaha, Lincoln, Sioux Falls among others. I was amazed to see so many people come out in 10 degree weather for a great day of workshops and a night of dancing. I love the location…it's in a basement of an apartment building and it looks like something out of a classic movie. There's this HUGE dance floor in the middle surrounded by elevated seating all the way around. There's a bar (always a plus) and a stage complete with a great sound system. Bellevue Ballroom has done a great job keeping this place alive and flourishing. Thanks to Jess for setting all of this up. Thanks to the Omaha gang for their wonderful support (8 years now coming to this area) over the years. Thanks to Stacie for a wonderful dance. www.dance.jacker-design.com

February 21, 2010Leaving Chicago is bittersweet. On one hand I get to go back home to the love of my life, my boys, my family, and my dogs. On the other hand I have to say goodbye to my extended family in Chi-town. We had some great laughs this weekend at Chicago Dance Camp. Swing-n-Country (the BEST dance club on the planet) puts on this shindig to promote the baby dancers, and again they have done a heckuva job. Despite the issues in the tally room, the event kept on and all the attendees had a great time. Jennifer Jeffries is one of my favorite people on the microphone, and this is one of the few weekends that we actually have time to catch up. The absolute high point of the weekend had to be watching Hania dance not only with her husband in the Pro-Am, but then she danced with her 4 year old son! PIERRE ROCKED!!! I've known Hania for over 10 years, and I've never seen her shine like she did on those four dances. That's right boys and girls, after dancing Two-Step (and not missing beat) both guys turned around and danced West Coast Swing! There really should be more events like this that cater to the newer competitors. It's amazing to watch so many new people gain confidence in themselves through dancing. Thanks to the entire staff at Swing-n-Country for a wonderful weekend. Oh and yes, Ron Obermann is still my hero. www.swingncountry.com

February 15, 2010Man am I tired…6am flights are really getting old. There are few people that could make me take a 6am flight. Dani Canziani is one of them. Now in her 12th year (I think) at the helm of the Capital Swing Dancers convention, Dani put on a great show. With staff and competitors both getting delayed on the east coast due to weather/cancellations/not enough seats for the entourage, Dani did a great job of adjusting the schedule and the event ran without a hitch…the true sign of a seasoned event director. I have to give props to Jeffrey Munson and Susan Brown for doing an AMAZING job on their routine despite her having to dance without a shoe! That's right folks, Susan's shoe came unstrapped about 20 seconds into the performance and later came off completely around the halfway mark. They didn't miss a beat and finished the performance like the champions they are. I'd also like to thank the Reno gang for Sunday night…sitting around the table laughing and telling stories is not something I often get to experience due to my travels, and it's refreshing to be able to gather with friends without having to dance/judge/teach/mc/dj. Cherish the times you get with friends, for they truly are rare at the end of the day… www.capitalswingdancers.org

February 7, 2010My new teaching home in Houston SSQQ deserves mention here. I'm always amazed at how some studios are able to cultivate an atmosphere of belonging where people begin to treat the business as their own. Rick Archer has managed to do just that in his years at the helm of SSQQ. I was home this weekend for an intensive at the famous studio, and I really have to thank two people in particular. Cher Longoria and Robert Goins are great people…period. Cher was instrumental in getting me to teach at SSQQ and personally sowed the seeds that led Rick and I to our meetings at Starbucks. Robert and Cher both thought it would be great if I were able to do another intensive in Houston, and took it upon themselves to make it happen. We had a good crowd with attendees from Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth. Thanks to all that attended and I hope to see you guys on the dance floor! Don't forget about Monday night classes at SSQQ! www.ssqq.com

January 24, 2010For once I didn't freeze my tail off in Chicago during the annual workshop weekend. It's probably because of the Minneapolis trip a couple of weeks ago, but it worked. What is there to say that I haven't already said about Chicago? My northern family, BJ, Ingrid, Julie, Donnie…at the risk of repeating myself for the umpteenth time you guys are truly family to me. My trips to Chicago are becoming more about the visits we get between classes than the workshops themselves. We are now in our 17th year of doing these workshops I think. There are few places that would put up with me for such a length of time. I still think that if I were ever to move from Houston it would be to Chicago…except for the winters. I'll see you guys in a month for Chicago Dance Camp! www.marioinchicago.com

January 18, 2010ACC WAS AMAZING!! I'm not saying this because it's my event, but because we had RECORD crowds. With over 1200 over the weekend, I have to thank everyone for supporting my and Cher's event. In this economy and with events seeing drops in attendance, it's reassuring to see that there are still people that have the same beliefs we do regarding dance events. AANCE was absolutely off the hook! The energy in the room during Saturday night's final is something I've only experienced a handful of times in my dance career, and I'm honored to have been a part of it. Thanks to Grace Killilea for MCing all weekend (the other MC didn't show up) and taking one for the team. I also want to shout out to our new floor guy (and lighting) for not only meeting my expectations, but exceeding them throughout the weekend. Young guy or not, you did an amazing job and were there for us the entire weekend. I've always believed that if you surround yourself with professional people you will come out on top, and this weekend was an example of just that. Thanks to Jess Acker for rounding up volunteers to help on door duty. If you like the music, thank you for that. It was a labor of love hand picking the music for all of the non-routine competitions and I intend to do it from now on. See you next year (our 20th) on Martin Luther King weekend. www.americasclassic.com

January 10, 2010Nothing like starting the New Year FREEZING YOUR TAIL OFF!!! Friends, Minneapolis is a beautiful city…just not in January. Not to worry though, the people are warm enough to make you forget about the cold…almost. Thanks to Todd Paulus and Joy Davina for putting together an intensive. Funny thing happened…my luggage went on vacation to Mexico while I went to Minneapolis. SPECIAL thanks to Monica "Lewinsky" Weber for giving me a shirt to wear on Saturday. Everyone there thanks you for the shirt Monica. If you haven't been to Social Dance Studio, you really should make your way there. Todd and Joy have nurtured a wonderfully warm environment to learn dancing at their studio. The studio dance Saturday had exhibitions from two different dance teams, Salsa and West Coast Swing. I understand both teams are competing in the near future, and I wish them both the best of luck. I've also discovered that I get Turret's when I'm exposed to -10 degree weather… www.socialdancestudio.com

December 6, 2009Tim "DJTJ" Johnson and Becky Larson had long been acquaintances of mine. I now am very pleased to consider them both friends. It was great getting to know both of them over the course of this weekend during the intensive. I hadn't been to the Motor City since Tera and Jeff Vitale's comp several years ago. Tim and Becky approached me earlier this year about coming up for a weekend. When I told them I only had December left available, they graciously agreed to try and put together a weekend of intensive and dances in the evening. I have been doing this a long time…trust me when I tell you few people are as thorough as Tim Johnson. The studio was great, the dances were packed each night, and everything was taken care of. It was great to be back in the Motor City, and I look forward to the possibility of coming back for workshops in 2010. December 3, 2009I have fallen in love with the land down under…I can't begin to tell you how warm the reception was for Samantha, Stephanie, and myself in Sydney. We were all welcomed into their land with open arms and a VERY strong desire to learn more about WCS. I have to thank Robin Everingham for opening up her home to me and my girls. I also would like to thank Raeleen Hollier for putting together this trip. I have made new friends and it is my sincerest hope that I was able to help these wonderful people feel better about their dancing. Special thanks to several teachers from all over Australia…Brett Lebrocque and Bianca Faber (Melbourne), Alan and Holly Skinner (Gold Coast), Charles and Michelle Gil with NUROC(Sydney), Leanne Landels with West Coast Swing Australia (Sydney), Juan (sorry I forgot your last name) from Perth…thank you all for your support over the last few weeks. Swing Dance Down Under is a not for profit organization that encourages and supports ALL the dance schools (a lesson we could all learn) equally and it has shown over the last two weeks through the support that all the schools gave the workshops and dances. To Nathan, Lindy, and Michael…thank you for taking me diving at Manly Beach and reminding me how wonderful it is to breathe under water…I swam with sharks! To Alan and Deanna…thank you for opening up your home to allow us to visit the Blue Mountains during the week…it reminded me of the sleep over's I had as a child and I had a blast! To Robin, Raeleen, Red (Robyn) and Paul…thank you all for taking my girls to go pet Koala's and Kangaroos, it was the experience of a lifetime for them both. To Nicole, Sean, and Tedd…thank you for doing what you did to embarrass the hell out of my niece at the Saturday dance…I don't think she'll ever think of Australia the same! Everyone in Australia was most gracious to the three of us over the last two weeks and I will eternally be grateful. To everyone else reading this…look out for Australia and New Zealand…they're coming on strong. I predict that we'll have several champs from Down Under very, very soon…I can't wait to go back!!! Holly…S'up? Alan, stand up! Charles, go get em! Raeleen…it was a dark and stormy night! Robin…Sexy! Red…Don't you come the raw prawn with me! Danny…God Dam Religious Experience! Leanne…and a 1! Paul…one time, man…just one time we gotta party. Brett…remember Jim Furyk. BIANCA WHERE'S THE BIKINI??!!!?!?????? www.swingdancedownunder.org

November 19, 2009G'DAY MATE! I have to give thanks to everyone who's ever taught me to teach at this point. You see, I'm blessed to have my life. It took cancer for me to figure that out, but I figured it out. I'm writing this blog post from a balcony overlooking a preserve in Sydney, Australia. I've had cockatoo's flying around all day, and yesterday (after a gruelingly long plane flight) we went and saw Sydney Harbor complete with the Opera House and the Bridge. I'm "down under" for two weeks thanks to Raeleen Hollier and Swing Dance Down Under. This is one of my bucket list trips, and I can't thank you all enough for making this possible. The fact that I'm here with Steph and Sam only makes it more great, and the only way it could be better is if my boys would have been able to come as well. November 15, 2009O…M…G! That's all I have to say about bookends! I'm pretty sure I can never run for public office now. Neil Klein and Willow Wall did another outstanding job with Swingin' New England. They have a great weekend of workshops in both Lindy and WCS with J&J and Strictly competitions tossed into the mix as well. However, over the years there is one division offered only at SNE that has grown to shadow all the other divisions…the 'infamous "Bookends" Division. What started out as a goof offering a division for anything but the "traditional" swing couple has grown…or maybe morphed…into something else. To quote Monty Python, "And now for something COMPLETELY different" in my opinion barely begins to describe the craziness (all in fun of course) that ensues on Saturday night at 1am. Attendees are warned that this division is not for the weak, and that virtually everything is allowed. Deborah Szekely (why does her name come up first?) did a GREAT job with her all girls team doing "Thriller" in complete zombie makeup. The two feature performances were the Northern Lights Dance Team (Thank you ladies for a wonderful evening) and the Men of Swing. I don't think I've laughed this hard in quite some time, and I thank (I think) both of you for having the wherewithal to do what you did in that ballroom. If you want to know more, you should attend the event. Each year, I tell myself there's not way it could go any further…yet it does. Amazingly enough, that wasn't my favorite part of the event. Thank you Anne Fleming for dancing with me, and giving me the honor of dancing with you. You should be very proud of all you've come through, and the person you are now is an example to what each one of us can overcome. I'm thankful for you, Anne…you kicked cancer's ass. WAY TO GO!!! www.dancingfeats.com/sne/

November 8, 2009I hadn't been to Tampa in quite some time. I used to go teach at a C&W bar called Despaparado's quite a few years ago, and I have some very fond memories of Tampa…YBOR CITY BABY! This was my first trip back in several years…since Earl and Lisa Strom brought me out for workshops and fun. I have to say Phil Dorral knows how to take care of people at his events. The Tampa Bay Classic apparently moved to a new location this year and it was held on the beach. When I say on the beach, I mean it. I don't think I've ever seen a dance floor literally built on the sand right by the water so event attendees could dance and watch the sunset over the Gulf of Mexico. I started on Wednesday with an intensive. This was my first time to teach an intensive in conjunction with a dance event weekend and I have to say it went very well. There was dancing every night and a great time was had by all. Thanks to Phil for a great extended weekend, and special thanks to Ruth for all of your hard work. Every good event has that special person that keeps everything working and Ruth filled that role like a pro. If you ever want to get away from the growing cold up north and hit a fun dance event, you really should check out the Tampa Bay Classic. Phil and I have already set another intensive prior to the event as well. If you want to sign up for the intensive or would like more information about the Tampa Bay Classic, visit the website. www.tampabayclassic.com

November 1, 2009Every time I go to Chicago, I feel more at home. This weekend I went back for the 4th (I think) Swing City Chicago. Julie, Maren, and Jeff really know how to throw a good party. Although I didn't have as much chance to socialize this year due to my hectic schedule, I really had a great time at this event. It's always nice to be at an event geared more towards dancing than competing. Even though SCC has plenty of good competition, there is tons of social dancing to be had over the course of the weekend. Saturday night's costume contest was crazy, and some of the costumes were amazing. I actually became a Dallas Cowboys fan (GASP) for the night. Had you seen the Cowboys Cheerleader costume you would have become one too! Thanks to Jennifer Jeffries for sharing the MC spot with me…you really are a pleasure to work with. To Julie, Maren, and Jeff my thanks for letting me come and play with you all yet again. I can't say enough good things about this crew and their gig. You have to come to Chicago. I hope next year to plan a field trip and bring some of my Houston students up to play with you guys. We might even make it downtown for some blues… www.swingcitychicago.com

October 18, 2009Being in this business full time for 22 years one tends to develop relationships with people all over the country/continent/world. I've been working with Ken Mercik now for over 15 years, and that's a pretty long time to get to know someone. The good news is we don't even need to discuss details anymore. I simply book my flights, fly in, and get to work with a proven number of workshops and dances. We get good crowds, and everyone has a good time. I officially became a member of the Polish Home on my last trip here for workshops (back in June) and received my membership card! The other wonderful thing about knowing someone this long is the trust factor. I told Ken last year about my desire to teach in all 50 states and he set up workshops for me in Providence, RI this time. BIG thanks to John and Dee Soares for setting up the classes on Thursday night. Delaware, North Dakota, Wyoming, Arkansas are all I have left now, so if you know anyone in those states that would like to set up a workshop let me know please! I'll be back in Enfield three times next year. Please go to his website for more information. HOT ROD LINCOLN! www.djkenm.com

October 12, 2009San Francisco (I learned that locals hate when it's referred to as "San Fran") really is a world class city. Andy Bouman and Beth Bellamy along with the rest of the Next Generation Swing Dance Club had their annual Boogie By The Bay and it was awesome. Being a world class city, there are a great number of international attendees at this event and it's wonderful to see fellow dancers from all over the world. West Coast Swing really and truly is becoming a worldwide phenomenon and I couldn't be happier. This dance has blessed me so much and I will eternally be grateful to it for allowing me to not only see the world, but meet fantastic souls as well as provide for my family by doing something I love. Enough sappy stuff…The event was packed with dancers from at least 4 different continents. Grace Killilea shared the MC duties with me and boy is she fun to work with! Kelly Casanova did another outstanding job as Chief Judge for the weekend. She worries a lot, and that's a wonderful trait for a chief judge. A HUGE high five goes out to Samantha Buckwalter my adopted Niece for conducting her first bigtime workshop at a bigtime dance event. Sam is one of the best dancers out there and it's about time the rest of the world started seeing it. I'm really proud of you Bam Bam, even though I'm sure I never say it enough in front of you. Thanks Andy and Beth and the rest of NextGen for letting me come play with you guys. Can't wait for next year! www.boogiebythebay.org

October 4, 2009It seems to me that there is a resurgence of events without competitions. Imagine (if you will) an entire weekend with workshops during the day and actual social dancing at night...there is no need for late-night dancing because you're exhausted by 1am. Rather than dancing from 1am until 6am and feeling awful for the next week you actually get to dance from 7pm until 1am and get a full night's sleep! Pat Korn and company put together a very fun weekend with the Atlanta Swing Classic. This is the type of event that draws 300 or so people so it's manageable and you actually get to dance and visit with people. The monster events with over 1000 (cough like Americas' Classic Championships cough) are great weekends but you can't possibly see everyone much less visit with everyone) and this event lets you do just that. For anyone not interested in competition, but still wants to dance all weekend, take good workshops, and go see a new city I recommend this event highly. I've noticed that many of the dancers I frequently saw 10 years ago don't seem to go to many events now due to the number of competitions and the lack of social dancing at a reasonable hour. I actually saw many of those people at this event. Check it out next year if you can www.americasclassic.com

September 28, 2009Maria Cirino is one of the most caring people I've had the honor to meet in all of my years as a dance teacher. She cares…really cares about her students and the people around her. She has always gone above and beyond in order to try and accommodate both students and pro's alike, and it shows in her event. Swing Niagara is an intimate, caring weekend dedicated to making sure everyone has a great time. Maria offer's divisions for Jack and Jill, Strictly, and routines for Rising Star. This is one of the few places you can come do a routine without having to compete against the big guys. I will always support this event and I will always support Maria. Young lady, you knocked it out of the park once again! We started Thursday night with an early bird dance right by Niagara Falls! Friday and Saturday had the usual workshops/competitions/late night dancing we've all come to expect from the better events, and I left early Sunday tired and happy. Special props go out to the Northern Lights Dance Team. If you were there, you know EXACTLY why I say that! You should check this one out, people…it's a really well put together weekend. www.swingniagara.com

September 14, 2009I was in a predicament. You see, I wanted to go see my girlfriend Stephanie (wow is she ever hot) for the weekend, but I needed an excuse to do so. Keith and Jena Armbruster were the people I needed to call in Calgary. They either know what to do, or they can put you in touch with the right people. Keith was kind enough to host an intensive weekend for me in Calgary so that I could come up and visit Steph. It was a small group, but we were able to accomplish quite a bit. Smaller groups always mean more chance to work with individuals over the course of the weekend and we really got a lot done. Keith and Jena host a convention in April called the Calgary Dance Stampede. They are world class dancers, and world class people. My thanks to both of you for putting together this weekend so that I might go visit Steph on her birthday. I'll be back in Calgary for the Stampede, and so should everyone else! www.calgarydancestampede.com

September 7, 2009There must really be something wrong with me. I am generally beat up at the end of a weekend convention. This weekend I was brave/stupid/gullible/idiot enough to actually work not one, but TWO CONVENTIONS IN THE SAME WEEKEND! Please, someone tell me what the hell I was thinking? I started on Thursday by driving up to Dallas for Dallas Dance. I taught the Thursday night workshop with Jason Barnes and Erica Berg (thanks to you guys for teaching with me) and dancing rather late. Friday found me MCing all the divisions at the event as is the norm. Over the years, my co-MC (and brother) Gary Long and I split duties on the microphone at Dallas Dance. I do Friday, he does Saturday and we both split Sunday. After MCing all night Friday (until 1am) I got up VERY EARLY in order to fly to New York for the Hudson Swing Affair. John Festa, you are one of the few people in this world I would do this for…and I have to admit it was worth it. John put together a first class weekend divided up into themes. I arrived Saturday around noon in time to attend the cookout on the top floor of the hotel overlooking the Manhattan Skyline. Man oh man, what a view! After DJing for a couple of hours, I taught a couple of workshops and we then went to the black and white dance in the evening. People really REALLY went all out dressing for this evening. Blake Hobby Dowling, you have always been an exceptionally beautiful lady. I have to say my jaw about dropped when I saw you in that formal dress! We all stayed up entirely too late and danced until we were exhausted. I got a whole hour of sleep before I had to get up and head back to the airport. John Lindo, thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty to take me back to Newark Airport that early in the day. I flew back to Dallas in time to MC the evening divisions. Hopefully by now you can see why I think there's something wrong with me. BOTH events are great and I recommend either of them very highly…not sure about attending both at the same time though…

August 30, 2009SIS! Kelly Casanova is my sister and I really mean that. Over the last 20+ years, both Kelly and Sylvia Sykes have become so much more than friends or business associates. Kelly was kind enough to host an intensive once again in Santa Rosa over the weekend. It was a great weekend of instruction and (I think) everyone had a great time. We had dances at the barn (if you saw it, you'd have a hard time calling it a barn) Friday and Saturday night, and it was a distinct weekend for me. I actually got the chance to dance with Kelly! Over the years, we've both become busier at conventions…sadly you never really get the chance to dance with those you really like due to work schedules. It's a rarity for us both to be: a)available b)in the ballroom c)energetic enough to go dance all at once. Thanks Sis, not only for a wonderful weekend, but also for your friendship over the years. I have always considered you to be one of the best in the business, and I am honored to call you part of my family. www.kellydance.com

August 23, 2009Randy and Jennifer Jeffries throw a great party…that is all. I flew back for Chicagoland…I'm really liking Chicago more and more every time I go. If it weren't for the cold and snow in winter…but I digress. Chicagoland is a GREAT weekend. Not only do you get to see world class dancing in both C&W and WCS, but you also get a great helping of Hustle as well. The Swing N Country crowd was there yet again to volunteer throughout the weekend and help out by hosting the Chicago Pizza Party on Friday night…mmm deep dish! This event is special to me because it's one of the few chances I get to see my friends from the UCWDC. Add to that Chicago and all my family (you guys really might as well be family…really) and it makes for a blast of a weekend. If you're looking for a friendly event that has a great variety of dances, look no further. Thanks Randy and Jennifer for yet another great weekend in Chi-Town. I'll see you guys in a few months for Swing City! www.chicagolanddancefestival.com

August 16, 2009GO EAGLES!!! Cept Vick…of course…boy did I hear that this weekend. Rob Baen and Sheila Purkey are the movers and shakers in the Philly area if you want to get your WCS on. I flew up for the weekend to teach workshops and dance. Friday's dance at the Atrium is getting HUGE crowds! The place was packed for the workshop as well as the dance afterwards. Saturday we went back to the little studio for workshops followed by the new tradition (I can make it a tradition…really) of having CHEESESTEAKS BABY!!! Man oh man do I love Philly Cheesesteaks. If you're ever in the area, look up Rob and Sheila…two wonderful people that put a lot of effort into the local dance community. Just be sure not to root for Michael Vick around either of them. Thanks guys for another wonderful weekend, and thanks Rob for all the wonderful music over the weekend…it's great to hear it still swinging. www.robandsheiladance.com

August 9, 2009Every time I go to an event without competition I get a little more convinced that this is the way to go if you have a limited budget. These weekends give you tons and tons of social dance time and yet also let you get to bed at a decent time…2am is decent, right? Georgia Watson and the rest of the group once again put on a fabulous weekend of workshops, dancing, exhibitions, and general merriment at the Mid-Ohio Boogie Bash in Columbus, OH. Sam and Lisa West, along with Bob Budzinsky were among the staff also there teaching workshops in several different styles of swing. I'm telling you, this is a fun weekend! If you aren't interested in competitions, and just want to dance until your feet actually hurt from dancing (rather than standing) then this is the place you need to be. One of the neatest things about this convention is that it starts on Thursday afternoon and ends on Sunday around midday so you can get back home and sleep before going back to the grind on Monday. Thanks to Georgia, Jim, and the rest of the committee for another wonderful weekend! www.midohioboogieclub.org/bash.html

July 27, 2009Right around the first of the year, my Father fell and broke his hip. Over the last 7 months, he's had hip replacement, rehab, and an infection causing more surgeries and the removal of his new hip. The net result of all of this was my needing to stay relatively close in case of emergencies. Now this is a task which I will always GLADLY take…family is always first in my eyes. What this all meant was that I couldn't go to Europe as originally planned around this time. When one door closes, another one opens…remember this always as it's a wonderful thing. Todd Paulus and Joy Davina have a studio in Minneapolis and they had talked about my coming up to teach sometime. Well, I called up Todd and in one month's time he was able to put together a great weekend of workshops and private lessons. I met some wonderful new friends (LEWINSKY!!!) and was able to get to know Todd and Joy a bit better. If you're ever in the twin cities, you should do your best to seek them out. They have a great thing going with Social Dance Studio and I can only see it growing from here. It's a young, energetic group of hungry to learn and have fun along the way. Thanks to Todd and Joy (mostly Joy of course) for a wonderful weekend, and I look forward to coming back in January for an intensive weekend. www.socialdancestudio.com

July 6, 20094th of July means only one thing to a WCS dancer in the USA…Phoenix! It was another great weekend in Arizona for the Greater Phoenix Swing Dance Club's 4th of July Convention. This is one of the oldest conventions on the circuit, and there's good reason for it. Consisting only of Jack and Jill competitions, this is the one time of the year where you see most of the professionals on the circuit taking it easy. In other words, this is our summer vacation (if there's really such a thing as working during your summer vacation that is) and everyone's out at the pool taking it easy and having fun. I always love getting the chance to see some very long time friends of mine that don't travel the circuit anymore. It was great to see Rudy Paaz (you're the man!) and Don and Rosalie Dressler (several time US Open Master's Champions) over the weekend, as well as the rest of the Phoenix gang. GPSDC has HUGE dances year round, and if you're ever in Phoenix you should definitely go get your dance on with this crowd. www.gpsdc.com

June 29, 2009I used to go to Denver Colorado at least once a year back when I attended over 20 UCWDC events per year. Back then, Scott and Cheryl Lindberg were the directors of the Colorado Country Classic. It was always a fun event, and the local group of dancers was a pleasure to be around. At the time, Kay Bryan was one of the local dancers…now she's the event director and she asked me to come back and play once again in Denver. I arrived Thursday for the world-renowned Club Crawl and the memories started rushing back. What a great time! We jumped on 2 busses and headed to the local C&W bars for a night of dancing and merriment. I was great seeing old friends as well as making new friends throughout the evening. Scott was true to form with "bus games" and I really, really never need to see him drop another quarter in the cup ever again. Saturday night Scott and I MC'd the dinner show and Kay brought back even more memories when she made us actually write our names with our butts! If you were around 10 years ago, you know exactly what I mean! Thanks to Kay for a wonderful weekend. There's no air, but man what a blast! www.coloradocountryclassic.net

June 17, 2009Extended weekend this time, and what a blast!!! I've been visiting New England now for about 18 years with Ken Mercik, and until this weekend had never actually made it into Vermont, New Hampshire, or Maine. This problem has been rectified. You see, I have this goal of teaching in all 50 states before I retire from dance as a living, and after this extended weekend now stand at 44 completed with 6 to go. Ken has known about this goal of mine for some time, and was kind enough to set up gigs on Monday and Tuesday. First off, I had a wonderful time teaching my yearly intensive for Ken at the Polish Home in Windsor Locks. Although we had a few less than normal, we still were able to explore and improve our dancing while having some laughs throughout the weekend. Between the Intensive during the day and workshops and dance Friday and Saturday nights I was pooped! But Monday saw Ken and me (with Coco the Doberman) jump in the new version of the "Hot Rod Lincoln" and head north to Vermont for private lessons followed by classes a block away from Dartmouth College (how cool was that) in the evening. My thanks to Jamie Orr for setting up the lessons on Monday…the energy was HUGE and I had a blast. Tuesday had us jumping back in the "Hot Rod Lincoln" and heading north once again…to Maine this time. Now for a little back story…I'm a nut for sandwiches. So much so, that I actually record programs on TV speaking about sandwiches and cool places to eat across the country…Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives anyone? I had seen a show on PBS years ago called "Sandwiches You Will Like" and one of the locations was in Maine. We looked it up and, after a bit of convincing Ken it would be worth it, we left the house early on Tuesday and headed for Wiscasset, Maine. There's a little shack there called "Red's Eats" on the side of the road that the TV program boasted had the best Lobster Roll ever…in other words I had to try this out sometime before I died. I have to agree with the show, it was the best lobster I've ever had in my life, and Ken actually didn't complain about the extra hour of driving (each way) to satisfy my curiosity. We headed back to Portland where Ed had set up classes. I was very surprised to see the room PACKED and the level of dance was higher than I imagined. Thanks to Ed for setting up the classes (Maniac Swing Society). I also have to thank Colleen who's been after me to come up to Maine for years. She actually wore a dress! After class we headed for a quick beverage at Portland's "oldest" pub…according to their sign and proceeded to stay there entirely too long having fun with everyone. Ken and I made it back to his house at 5am totally exhausted, but with a new tale to tell and an extremely happy stomach full of the best… lobstah…evah.

June 7, 2009Jim Minty has to be the biggest swing dancer on the planet. I always forget how big he is until I see him. Being 6 foot 3, I’m not accustomed to seeing many people taller than me and it always impresses me when I first see Jim. This weekend was spent in the great Northwest for an intensive weekend in Seattle. Kirkland Dance Studio was the location for the weekend, and I had a blast teaching a great group of people. Jim and Trula are extremely gracious hosts, and we can’t forget about Whiskey!!! What a great dog. It was nice making new friends (Bonnie lights up a room when she dances) and visiting with old friends (Arthur and Trudy from Portland are always fun). I still have a crush on Honey Van Eecke (pronounced eck…it’s finally been clarified) who I must congratulate for finishing up with nursing school. You should be studying for that exam in 2 weeks! To my brother from another mother Thomas from Boise…man you make me laugh….break on 2, baby! Thanks to all the ladies that danced with me on Saturday night, and I hope to see you all again very soon. Don’t forget about Seattle’s Easter Swing next year in April. http://www.seattlewcswing.com for more information.

June 1, 2009In my 20+ years on the road as a dance instructor I’ve been blessed to meet some of the most wonderful souls throughout the world. I have over the years adopted (or rather been adopted by) two sisters…Sylvia Sykes and Kelly Casanova. In the process I’ve also inherited a lovely niece Samantha who has gone above and beyond the call of duty for me too many times to mention. I don’t think that I could ever repay or thank these three ladies for their support and encouragement over these last few years. Kelly was kind enough to set up classes for me this weekend and Sam and I flew into SFO for a GREAT weekend of classes and visiting. Kelly’s husband Bob has become an extremely valued friend over the last couple of years as I’ve dealt with life through divorce and it’s always nice to be able to spend some time what I consider to be my family. Friday had a packed house at Bay West, Saturday was jammed once again at Warren and Yenni’s warehouse studio (where I had the most wonderful dance with Kelly by the sound system…good honest WCS…it was bliss), and Sunday found me teaching at Mike Pyle’s Lakeside Swing (where I had another great dance with Kelly in the corner…it doesn’t get any better than this.) My thanks to all three locations for allowing me to come in and have fun teaching to full houses. Bigger thanks to Kelly, Bob, Sam…you three are part of my family and one of the biggest reasons I’m so blessed.

May 25, 2009Memorial Day Weekend can only mean one place if you’re part of the national WCS circuit…Atlanta. Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee hosted the 15th annual (I can’t believe it’s 15 years old either) USA Grand Nationals. The hotel is arguably one of the finest we visit on the circuit, Shag Atlanta does some of the best work of the year hosting the Hospitality Room, and Linda Bellflower runs one of the smoothest ships I’ve ever had to the honor to work. The workshops as always are PACKED, and this year there were over 200 attendees in my class. Thank you, thank you, thank you to all those who’ve attended my workshops. I’m blessed to have such a warm response to my work. This has to be one of the classiest events of the year, and if you’re on a budget and want to attend a bigtime event with the top of the top dancing you really should put this event on your list. Lance, always a pleasure to work with you sir. Norfleet, always a pleasure to sit and compare fishing stories with you my brother. For more information on GNDC, please visit http://www.usagrandnationals.com and I hope to see you there next year.

May 10, 2009Of all the people in the national dance community, I have to admit that Dani Canziani is one of my favorites. I was very happy to get the chance to visit Dani and Jeffrey in Reno this weekend for workshops, private lessons, and partying. My thanks to the BLSDC (pronounced “ballistic” and yes it freaked me out too when I first heard it) Biggest Little Swing Dance Club for putting together the weekend and giving me the chance to come in and play for the weekend. Friday began with a chance to visit and catch up, a lesson or two, and a great dinner at Dani’s house. Saturday had three great workshops and a fun dance…I must have danced all night at that one. Thanks to Joe for the music Saturday night. Although I had to leave fairly early on Sunday, I hope to be back soon and I promise I’ll stay a bit longer! If you’re ever in Reno, check out http://www.blsdc.org/ for dancing!

Mary 3, 2009Ken Mercik hosted the second annual Swing Into Spring event in Windsor Locks, CT. Although it was held at the same hotel as last year (anyone that remembers the hotel is cringing right now) I was VERY pleasantly surprised with the hotel, the rooms, and the staffing. All have been remodeled and replaced and it shows from the moment you walk into the facility. Ken’s idea for the weekend is to get all the contests over with early enough to actually be able to enjoy an evening of dancing, and he hit it out of the park this weekend. Great workshops (other instructors were MaryAnn Nunez, John Lindo, and Angel Figueroa as well as some of the best regional teachers) throughout the weekend along with plenty of social dance time that actually starts before 1am make this a good event in my opinion. I also got the chance to start putting together a team routine for some of the area’s dancers, and I look forward to seeing it on the floor sometime soon! Ken has great dances almost every Friday and there’s always something going on in the area. Check out www.djkenm.com for more information.

April 26, 2009I have recently begun a new work relationship in Houston with arguably the most successful non-franchise studio in the greater Houston area…SSQQ. This studio’s ability to make social dancing fun has led to a very storied reputation within the local community. With over 20 years in the business, owner Rick Archer has done something very few studios have ever been able to do…bring dancing to the common person en masse. With over 1000 students each month, SSQQ has to be one of the best places to learn in town. SSQQ is also famous for it’s monthly dance parties. Probably the most famous is it’s tribute to the Houston Whip called the Sleazy Bar Party. I was flattered when Rick asked me to teach on both Friday and Saturday nights during the Sleazy Bar Weekend. Friday’s class was on the history of the Whip and how many of the regional styles across the country came to be after WWII. Saturday I was asked to teach the Sleazy Whip Workshop that has become famous among the dancers in the Houston area. I was taken aback when after the first half of class I was informed that my material wasn’t sleazy enough! There’s apparently a reason this class doesn’t rotate partners, so I cut loose and we had an absolute blast! I have to thank Amy Carter for helping me out with the workshop…really!!! I also would like to thank Rick for hiring me to teach at SSQQ. Although I’ve only been there a short while teaching on Monday nights, the reception I’ve gotten has made me feel at home teaching in Houston once again. My Monday classes have been packed, packed, packed and it’s darned nice to be teaching at home once again. Thanks also to the intensive attendees from the weekend. I have to admit it was refreshing to teach from a purely social perspective, and I hope to continue to do so for a long time at SSQQ. www.ssqq.com for more information

April 12, 2009Considering that I hadn’t been to Florida much in the last few years, it was kind of strange that I do back to back weekends in the Sunshine State. I have to tell you, Cindy Lee Overton has done a remarkable job cultivating the dance community in Fort Myers, Florida. I arrived on Thursday afternoon to teach a couple of privates and an introductory workshop to a great crowd. Friday saw more private lessons, another workshop and a great night of dancing at 1st Danz. The dance was a crossover dance combining both WCS and Salsa in one evening and the result was wonderful! It was funny because the evening began with one group dancing while the other group sat and watched. As the evening went on, slowly and surely the two sides started crossing over and attempting to dance the other side’s dance. It ended with everyone having a blast and dancing until the party ended at 1am! Saturday was the “mini” intensive 3 hour workshop that had the studio full of students. Thanks to Cindy for making Easter weekend not only a fun weekend, but a chance to meet and make new friends! I look forward to coming back to Fort Myers. April 5, 2009What seems like forever ago, I was called and informed that I had been voted into the National Boppers Hall of Fame. At that time, I was asked to attend a weekend in Jacksonville, Florida to receive my induction and teach workshops at their weekend convention. I had not been to Jacksonville since that weekend, and boy what a wonderful weekend! Thanks to Debi Dillow, I was able to come in and teach not only a weekend intensive to people from Florida and Georgia, but classes to the local community as well. Every class was packed! I taught all weekend at Club Desiree where the Hall of Fame pictures are proudly presented along an entire wall, and man did it feel cool to be in such select company. I saw a picture of the late and great Jerry Crim, who I still consider to have been one of the most knowledgeable minds in the history of swing. My picture showed me dancing with Carmen Scarborough back in 1995 and a flood of memories came back when I saw that picture. Debi and Tony put together a top notch weekend and have really developed a very vibrant dance community in the area. If you’re ever in the area, be sure to get in touch with Debi and I’m sure there will be plenty of great dancing in your future.

March 29, 2009One of the first events ever held in New England was the Boston Tea Party. The original BTP was held at a dance venue then run by Dan Mezrich called Vera’s quite a few years ago. Headlining that event were Kelly Casanova (Buckwalter at the time), Sonny Watson, and yours truly. I hadn’t been to BTP for a few years, and it was wonderful to be able to go back and work the event once again thanks to Steve and Rebecca Drzewiczewski (bet you didn’t think I could spell it did ya?...think “drive a chevy” and you’re close to the pronunciation) and their cast of volunteers. It was especially nice to be able to teach classes with one of my favorite followers, Mrs. Blake Dowling. Thanks to Blake for allowing me to teach with her, and as always for giving me new insights on how to better break things down. I really enjoyed my dances with one Heidi Mongeau…boy are you fun to dance with. All in all a wonderful weekend with plenty of dancing and one of the few events that crosses over with both Lindy and WCS in the same venue. Thanks to Steve and Rebecca for a great weekend!

March 22, 2009HOTLANTA GEORGIA! One of my all-time favorite country and western weekends has to be Peach State. Bill Robinson, Linda Hembree and crew put together a top notch weekend that puts social dancing first and foremost with tons of fun mixed in. The crowds are always receptive and friendly, the classes are always full of people and energy, and the dancing is poppin well into the wee hours. I missed Peach State for a couple of years due to another event I ran in Houston, but never again will I miss this weekend. I’ll be there as long as they invite me back. It was great to see friends from the C&W world that I don’t get a chance to see that often since I’m not at as many UCWDC events these days. Special “Hello’s” to Jo Thompson (THE Jo Thompson), Dave Getty (anyone still call him Dakota?) Mona Broussard (what’s this wire do?) and the gang of volunteers in Atlanta that I’ve known for years. I first met some of you back in the late 1980’s at the famous Miss Kitty’s club in Atlanta, and I’m very happy to still call you friends. I’ll see you next year at Peach State for sure. http://www.peachstatedance.com/

March 16, 2009WOW what a week! After getting home at 2am on Sunday night, I had to turn around and head for London Monday at 7pm. I haven’t stopped moving since! Samantha has been spending the last 6 weeks in London teaching for our good friend Mike Rosa and Dance Swing UK. I arrived on Tuesday morning to a great big hug from the best niece on the planet! Tuesday night found me at Archangel in Kensington teaching the group classes…man what a great group! This is where I met the 2 Sarah’s…and things weren’t the same ever again. Wednesday I taught at the Docklands location, and Thursday classes were held in Marlow on the western outskirts of London. Over the weekend, I taught my first intensive outside North America. I have to admit the dancing in London is growing exponentially, and there are now quite a few very good dancers across the pond. Mike Rosa is on to something, and I see it growing quite a bit over the next few years. I’d like to thank Mike for setting up the week, and for allowing Samantha the opportunity to go teach in Europe. Sam’s really began nurturing a cohesive community that is inclusive of all teachers and dancers, and I couldn’t be more proud of her and what she’s accomplished already. If you’re in the UK, take advantage of Sam’s instruction while she’s there, you won’t be disappointed. Apparently, she’s listened to her mother and me more than I realized. ON a final note, if you’re ever at Archangel on a Tuesday night, remember that a bent ass is a slapped ass…you’ve been warned…I’ve never wanted to drop things while teaching more often in my entire life! I can’t wait to go back in July. For more information, please contact Mike Rosa.

March 8, 2009Sioux City Iowa is not a location that most would consider a bastion of West Coast Swing. Thanks to Jess Acker it’s now starting to blossom as a growing location for good social dancing. Jess was kind enough to host me and my boys for the weekend. Friday included the best Philly Cheese steaks on the planet, Rock Climbing and a Hockey game. Honestly, how can this not be a great weekend already? Mom and Dad Acker watched the boys on Saturday and Sunday while I taught workshops in a BEAUTIFUL ballroom you would never know existed. According to Mom, Dad, and the boys there was plenty of fun to be had. Touring an Ice Cream plant, snowball fights, seeing deer outside the back yard, and sliding on ice in the back yard were all in order for the boys over the course of the Saturday, and I think I would have rather been with Mom and Dad! The workshops were a blast, and we had people in attendance from Kansas City, Omaha, Lincoln, and other neighboring locations as well as Sioux City. Sunday the boys had a big breakfast with Mom and Dad that included what the boys proclaimed was, “the best bacon I’ve ever had, even better than mom’s” and more snowball fights while I taught a few private lessons before heading back to Houston. Once we got back to Omaha, we hit Brewburger for a famous burger featured on TV’s “Diners Drive-ins and Dives” that was every bit as good as I thought it would be. The only drawback to the weekend was the 5 hour delay at the airport heading back home, but it wasn’t too bad as it provided a chance to spend some fun time with my boys at the airport. Over 20 years on the road, you learn how to keep yourself occupied at an airport. Some things can’t be controlled, and now my children have gotten a good look over the last two weekends at what the old man does for a living. Special thanks to the girls Marena and Jodi for setting up Rock Climbing for my boys on Friday night, Steve and Jo Van Tuyl for joining us at the hockey game Friday night, Mom and Dad Acker for watching the boys over the weekend while the workshops and private lessons were held, and especially Jess Acker for setting up the entire weekend.

March 1, 2009If there were one person in the swing dance community who influenced my teaching and choreography, it would be Gary Long. “Brother Long” is one of my best friends, and I consider myself blessed to have gotten the opportunity to meet this wonderful spirit in my life. Gary and his lovely wife Karen put together a 3 hour workshop this weekend and I brought my children, Mario and Anthony to big D for the weekend. I used to go to Dallas once a month many years ago, and I think I might start going back more often. Both my children and I had a blast this weekend. The workshop was fun and everyone had a good time. The boys have now found a new favorite place to eat…BoneDaddy’s House of Smoke. If you ever go, you’ll understand why my 13 year old son is now in love with the establishment. The wait staff is the key, and Mario Jr. even got a picture with our waitress Mary…now his wallpaper on his cell phone. Thanks to Gary, Karen, and Claudia for helping me out on the workshop. Bradford came out for dinner as well, and a good time was had by all. I think I’ll try to head back in May…the next weekend I have available.

February 22, 2009Dance Camp Chicago is the new name for an event that’s been going on for years. Tobi Oberman and the rest of the gang at Swing N Country have once again knocked it out of the park. This weekend caters to the less experienced dancers by offering them a place to compete without worry. It’s events like this that keep our community growing due to the nurturing of new students. Ron Oberman and I were in the front row (he’s still my hero) for the show Saturday night where Jill Popovich demonstrated her ability as a Chanteuse. Wow what a rack!!! If you get a chance to see the video you’ll understand. Jill is a perfect example of why this is such a wonderful weekend. Jill got her start at this event several years ago. Because of Dance Camp Chicago, Jill was inspired to pursue her dancing and as a result we have another wonderful dancer in our community. Way to go Swing N Country…in my opinion you guys are arguably the best social dance club in the nation.

February 17, 2009What a life I have. Over the last two weeks I’ve gone to Argentina, Uruguay, the Falkland Islands, and Chile as part of Swingin @ Sea 2009. Beata Howe is more organized than ever, and looks after everyone to be sure all are having a great time, even when she’s not feeling well. Cruising Cape Horn and the bottom of the world is an experience I will treasure forever. This last two weeks was exactly what the doctor ordered…time away from the normal grind to regather and reconnect with myself and dancing. This was a standout crowd…50 of the nicest people you could ever want to meet, and not a bad egg in the bunch. Special thanks to Betty my tango partner! I can’t recommend Swingin @ Sea more highly for anyone interested in doing a dance cruise. The workshops were all on time, and Beata did an incredible job making sure everyone was well taken care of. I had the chance to get to know several people better, including Gary Ulaner - TREMENDOUS man, and a great heart…never turned down a dance the entire cruise) Phil Dorral - always willing to share his music and expertise with everyone on board, and went above and beyond making sure all the workshops had sound and ran smoothly. Nancy Farrel – Wow what a great energy! This lady was always smiling, and welcomed everyone to the group…thank you for the luggage tags! Walter Perez – PISCO SOUR! This man speaks Tango like no other, and what’s more is his willingness to share it with anyone and everyone around him. Walter was never without his accompaniment of ladies and took it upon himself to play tour guide of many of our stops. Walter and I served as translators during the cruise for the rest of the gang. Finally Beata, what do you say about someone you’ve known for over 20 years that you haven’t said before? I have always been impressed with Beata’s attention to detail both in and out of the dance. I was particularly impressed with the degree to which she looked after everyone on the cruise, missing excursions to see about workshops and staying back to be sure everyone made it on the busses. This level of caring is something not often seen in a dance teacher, and needs to be pointed out. I look forward to being a part of Swingin @ Sea 2010, make plans now for the end of January cuz we’re gonna do something…details to follow. Check back on my website or Beata’s www.beatahowe.com for more information.

January 30, 2009GOING CRUISIN! Years ago I was lucky enough to do a couple of cruises with Beata Howe as part of Swingin @ Sea. I’m headed now to SOUTH AMERICA to be a part of Swingin @ Sea 2009! We are scheduled to sail from Buenos Aires (how cool is this) all the way around Cape Horn (YEAH) and up the west side of the continent up to Valparaiso and Santiago, Chile. If ever I have stated how blessed I am to have a career that has let me see the world, believe me I’m saying it now. Thanks to Beata for letting me be a part of this experience.

January 26, 2009Let’s see, cold, snow, January…must be time for Chicago! Why I ever agreed to January workshops in Chicago I’ll never really know. The strangest part is my looking forward to freezing my tail off every year! Ingrid, Julie, BJ, Donnie and the rest of the gang have become my family away from home because of this weekend. Hard to believe we’ve been doing this over 15 years now. Every year, they manage to pack the room for workshops and everyone has a great time.

January 19, 2009Another year at Americas’ Classic Championships have come and gone. All I have to say is RECORD CROWDS! We had over 100 entries in our Novice J&J, holy cow! Thanks to Cher for being the best business partner a guy could ever ask for. Bill Cameron also deserves thanks for jumping in to MC the afternoon shift with very short notice, as does Robert Cordoba for taking on the added work of judging over the weekend. We are indeed fortunate to have friends like this who are willing and humble enough to do whatever it takes to make an event succeed. The standout moment for me over the weekend was Saturday night when I was blessed to dance with the three best followers from three different eras. Rose Marie Mallady, you will forever be the best follow on the planet in my eyes…I don’t know how you do it, but you’re never late and you never anticipate. Valerie LaFemina, I was lucky enough to be your dance partner almost 20 years ago, and the dances we shared that night were as memorable to me as any of the competitions we won…what a follow, and what a fast spinner. You will always be the Ferrari of the dance in my eyes. Blake Dowling (Hobby), there is elegance personified. Dancing with you transforms me into something more sophisticated than I ever thought possible. I adore watching you interpret music and thank you for letting me hold your hand while it happens. These three ladies made the first ever ACC without Truman tolerable, and even quite enjoyable on Saturday night. Truman, you were missed but not forgotten…NEVER forgotten while I’m a part of this world.

January 5, 2009Joe and Kathy Mahoney have put together another wonderful weekend. Great workshops, a great crowd, great music all make for a memorable weekend. My boy Vic even dragged out some music from waaaay back when I had knees on Saturday night and kept the entire floor dancing way into the wee hours. I have to give my thanks to Eric Cudmore for the ride from the airport during Boston rush hour. It was a great chance to get to know a good guy outside the dance world. Deborah, thank you for my SS dance…always a pleasure to dance with that much talent…period.

December 9, 2008LONDON – ‘ELLO LUV! This was my third trip to Europe this year, and Mike Rosa has knocked it out of the park. In his first official attempt as a director, he has produced HUGE workshops (at a gun range of all places!) and again made me feel at home. Mike has become my brother from another mother this year…it seems we have entirely too much in common. It’s a good thing neither of us drink anymore, I’d be very afraid of the results otherwise. Thanks to Pete, Eva and Chelsea for putting together workshops at the last minute in the midlands so that I can come up and play outside of London. Staying in the UK for an extended period gave me a chance to see more of the dance scene, and I must say London and the UK are coming on strong! I’d also like to thanks Lee for letting me take over his Monday classes, Gaza and the Westco group for letting me teach on Thursday, and the ladies who gave me great dances all week long! Balca and Nadia, you ladies ROCK for taking a couple of old guys (mostly Mike here) out dancing to see the London club scene…WOT

November 17, 2008It’s always exciting going to teach in a new place. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I was first contacted by Boise, Idaho’s High Desert Swing Dance Club to come teach for them. Boy what a pleasant surprise! To quote my new friend Thomas, “SOLID!” Thanks to Jennifer and Penni along with the rest of the club for putting together a great weekend of dancing. If you’ve never been to Boise, you really should make the trip. Over 86% of Idaho is public lands, and it’s absolutely gorgeous up there. Thanks to everyone for making me feel to welcome, especially Amy for the Whip dances (she’s a Houston transplant…Milby High School baby!) and Kathleen for the wonderful conversation and the dances (I’ll dance with you anytime) and of course Jennifer and Thomas for putting me up in their wonderful home. If you are ever in Boise, remember to hold 1…then break on 2!!!! GO BOISE STATE BRONCOS! Jeez, they have a blue field…smurf turf. P.s. Dave’s car ROCKS…I’m just sayin.

November 10, 2008Speaking of relaxed laid-back weekends, Swingin New England stands out as one of the best. Neil Klein and Willow Colson-Wall once again knocked it out of the park. If you'll recall, last year I raved about the crossover room on Saturday night, with Peter Strom playing all the Motown and Stax tunes that kept me dancing nonstop (really, honest) until after 4am when I couldn't go anymore. I hadn't been covered in sweat from dancing in a very long time. This year, Willow asked me to help DJ with Peter on Saturday night. Thanks to Peter for letting me come in and play with you (until 4am again, I'm getting too old for this…not!) and hearing some of those great songs. Amazingly enough, the whole room was dancing. Maybe other events will get the message and play less hip-hop and more music from that era. I also had the honor of teaching with my sister, Ms. Sylvia Sikes. Both Sylvia and Kelly Casanova adopted me over 20 years ago, and I will forever consider both of them to be my family. Sylvia is one of the Keepers of the Dance, and I'm blessed not only to know her, but also to have the honor of teaching with her. Her unique style is straightforward and approachable, two things I find key to getting the message across to students. She makes me laugh and learn at the same time. Perhaps that's why she's been successful as a dance teacher on the circuit for over 20 years. Thanks to Deborah and Robert for picking me up at the airport (it's 10:25 by the way…) and feeding me a wonderful dinner on Thursday night. Also, thanks to Jess (my newfound friend) for the ride back to the airport and the conversation and company along the way. www.dancingfeats.com/sne

November 3, 2008Many events say they cater to the beginning or less experienced dancers…the everyday people that dance for fun rather than make their living off of teaching and performing…few event actually do this. Swing City Chicago (yep, it's still my kind of town) is still in it's infancy, yet it continues to impress the fire out of me. Julie Hein and Maren Oslac once again put on an event for the masses, rather than the "hot dogs" last weekend. The amazing part is they really draw on some of the most professional teachers as a result. The teaching staff at this event truly enjoys teaching/dancing/socializing with EVERYONE, instead of sticking to themselves. The All-Star Studded hour again amazed me with it's turnout. An hour divided into 10 minute mini-lessons donated by the pro's attending the event and either bought or bid on by the spectators…all for charity. It really feels good to support an event that gives back. Thanks to Julie, Maren, Jeff and all of Chi-town for a great weekend. Swing-n-Country, you are arguably the best social dance club in the country. You always support all the events in your city, and go the extra mile manning volunteer stations and hosting the pizza party. One final word, Ron Oberman you are still my hero. Someday I hope to have half as much fun dancing as you do…

October 26, 2008This weekend I made another trip to the Great White North. This time, I visited Toronto thanks to Katherine Dierzotis. I had known Katherine for a couple of years, and it was very nice getting to know her this weekend. What a kind and caring young lady! She went the extra mile on Saturday night when we thought our dance spot was having a private party and drove out there expecting to sit in the parking lot letting the out of town people know that our dance night was called off. How many people would do that??? I had the chance to teach for the Toronto Swing Dance Society on Friday night at their dance. Thanks to Gero and the rest of the club for welcoming me with such open arms, and thanks to the many ladies for the wonderful dances! As always my Toronto girls Julie and Shelley were there and it was nice catching up with them. Shelley and her husband Dave recently had a baby, and she already looks great again! Julie always looks great! Katherine too!!! ALL THE CANADIAN WOMEN ARE BEAUTIFUL!!!!! (disclaimer - I really don't want to get in trouble here) To the two couples from London, Ontario who's names escape me right now, thanks for the beer and the company, and the quick hockey lesson.

October 19, 2008Jess Acker has become a very close friend of mine, especially through the difficult times I've have over the last couple of years. She brought me in for the weekend to Omaha, and of course our first stop was at Pepperjack's for a Philly Cheesesteak (remember if in Philly just call it a cheesesteak or you get in trouble) as it is now the tradition. Oh man, these are the best Philly Cheesesteaks (yes they deserve to be capitalized they are that good) on the planet! Sorry Philly, WOW these are good! We then made the trek to Sioux City where Jess lives on Thursday and had to have a couple of Charlie Boys! To hell with my diet this weekend. Friday we went back to Omaha and got to work. We hit McKenna's blues bar, the place where I got the shirt with the expression "When Adam first met Eve, that's when the blues started." I used to think that statement was funny…now I just think it's expensive… www.omahadancing.com

October 12, 2008Last year at Boogie By The Bay, Andy Bouman had the "Testicular Fortitude" to make a stand for what he believed in. Kelly Casanova, the head judge and Andy both received a lot of flack and grief from many of the alleged "pros" in our industry because of their stand. The net result, many couples reworked their routines and the message got across, even if only slightly to some. Swing dancing has always been extremely subjective (as is any art form really) but I have to admit I really admire Andy, Kelly, and the rest of the staff at Boogie for doing what I believe is right for the dance. I applauded them last year, and this year's attendance is proof that other's agreed with the position to preserve the dance. The ballroom and workshops were packed (at least I know mine was) and the crowd was up and jumping all weekend long. Andy, I said it before and I'll say it again…I'll work for you anytime, anyplace, period. First class, all the way and I'm honored to be associated with your convention. www.boogiebythebay.org

October 5, 2008Twice a year I get to go play in Enfield, CT. thanks to Ken Mercik. Say what you will, but Ken has been supporting dancing in New England for about 20 years now. I hooked up with Ken back when we both had knees and hair! These days, we both sound like popcorn from all the creaks in our body, but we're still having a blast at the Polish Home in Enfield. Thanks to the lovely Angelique Early for helping me out in the workshops; you really have become a heckuva good dancer! Rob, you still own my man! If you're ever in New England, try to make it to Ken's Friday dances. It's a very friendly and welcoming crowd, and there's plenty of dancing to be had. www.djkenm.com -Mario
September 29, 2008Meet Me In St. Louis, what a blast! SHOW ME!!!! It was my first time attending this event, and the second year for the event. Last year I missed it because it was my oldest son's birthday…HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARIO JR! Man, it's hard to believe I have a teenager! Cory Johnson and company did a bang-up job on the event, and the attendance was proof. A packed ballroom and plenty of dancing abounded throughout the weekend. Again, I was happy to get a chance to visit with my USOpen partner Val LaFemina (1991), man can that lady ever dance. Amazing, we can go months without dancing and the moment we're on the floor together it feels like we were never apart. I'm lucky to have had the honor of dancing with her…WOOF! Thanks to everyone from the St. Louis Rebels for a wonderful weekend, and I hope to see you guys again very, very soon! Someone please go buy Missy a watch… www.meetmeinstlouisscd.com

September 15, 2008Swing Niagara in Buffalo! Maria Cirino once again did a spectacular job putting the event together, and it was a good mix of people from all over the northeast US and Canada. Hurricane Ike has come to visit Houston, and I was unable to get back home on Sunday night. One of the few perks of flying virtually every week is the hotline for reservations at Continental Airlines. They really went the extra mile and were able to get not only me, but also Victor Loveira and a couple of my students all rerouted home on Monday when most won't be able to get back until late in the week. I have no power at home, and I fear that this might be the case for awhile. Hopefully the electrical teams from all over the country will be able to restore power soon. There is currently a curfew in Houston, and I understand that over half of the city is without power. Mercifully I had no damage to my house, and my boys and family survived unscathed aside from some minor tree damage. I hope that those less fortunate are ok, and will make it through this difficult time as quickly as possible. My thoughts and prayers are with those less fortunate. www.swingniagara.com

September 7, 2008It has been awhile since I traveled to the Great White North. Keith and Jena Armbruster were the producers that brought me in to play in Calgary this weekend. I first traveled to Calgary with Jojo Belmonte back in the mid 90's, and I've made several good friends up there. It was wonderful to go to Ranchman's once again…some things never do change. I had the chance to catch up with quite a few faces that I don't get to see very often anymore. Keith and Jena have done a wonderful job keeping the dance community flourishing in Calgary, and it's one of the few stops along the way where everyone is good at several dances rather than just one. Plus I got the chance to tell my Canadian exchange jokes once again! Those jokes are awful, but the really never get old to me, eh!

September 1, 2008Dallas Dance is now legal. Starting in 1987, this event has become one of the largest in the nation, and with good reason. HUGE dance floor, Texas hospitality (second only to ACC www.americasclassic,com) and tons of good friends make this a yearly stop for me. Terry Rippa (a Dallas institution) and the Dallas Push Club once again knocked it out of the park. I had the distinct honor of teaching for the very first time with my mentor, Mr. Gary Long himself. I have to admit, he really is the best teacher I've ever seen in my life. His charisma while teaching is unparalleled in my opinion, and I am blessed to have learned from the master himself. Claudia was there to help as always, and my thanks go out to her for her years of friendship along the way. Claudia is one of those people you hope never leave your life…she's always there to help with a smile. Hurricane season is upon us and several of our Louisiana neighbors left the event early to go protect their homes and families from the storm. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone in the path of a hurricane. www.dallasdance.com

August 24, 2008It's always nice to go to an event without any competition. Far too often, people get too nervous and forget the reason they started attending these weekends in the first place. Remember having fun social dancing? Remember when you could social dance before 1am in the main ballroom? Remember when they played blues and swing music all night long? If you long for those weekends, then the Mid-Ohio Boogie Bash is the place for you. Georgia Watson has for the three years I've attended put on one of the friendliest and stress free weekends of the year. There are a couple of exhibitions on Saturday night, but nothing to get nervous about. No contests…wow. Social dancing starts early in the evening and actually ends at a time that isn't an exercise in sleep deprivation. I'll be there as long as she'll invite me. Heck even Sam and Lisa West attend so you know it's a good time. If you haven't tried his chocolate, you're missing out. www.midohioboogieclub.org

August 17, 2008I know you've heard it from me a bunch already, but Chicago is my kind of town! This weekend was the annual UCWDC event in Chi-town, aka Chicagoland. Once again, Randy and Jennifer Jeffries have put on a first rate event. They run things efficiently, are well organized, and always have a smile on their faces throughout the weekend. If you've ever put on a weekend, you quickly realize just how difficult that is to pull off. Saturday night I actually got a rope and tied Jennifer on the floor in the middle of the ballroom. Yes there are pictures! Last year I got between her legs while Mcing. This year I tied her down on the floor with a rope. I'm wondering now how I can top this for next year. God help you Jennifer! I hope I get invited back…MWAHAHAHA! www.chicagolanddancefestival.com

August 10, 2008Philly is a great town. Down to earth people, no one putting on airs and overdoing stuff, you know what I mean? Rob and Shiela Purkey brought me in for a weekend of workshops and it was a pleasure getting to know them a bit better. They've been around for quite some time, and I finally had the chance to just hang out with them for awhile…very nice people (mostly Shiela or course, hehe) and extremely hospitable. I got the chance to see Ms. Grace Killelea (always Ms. Grace if you know what's good for you) on Friday night at the workshop and dance. Saturday saw workshops followed by a trip to Tony Luke's for a cheesesteak (it's only called a Philly Cheesesteak if you're not in Philly) and we took about 7 of us to go eat at the famous establishment. Bridgette was my date (boy is she cute) and after dinner the girls went out partying while us old people went home and got some rest and much needed tv. Rob and Shiela have a dance in Philly on the second weekend of the month. If you're around, go check it out. It's a ton of fun with a big crowd and a hustle room next door. Next time, Rob promised me we'd hit a better place for a cheesesteak. It's on!

August 3, 2008Reno is a beautiful place. The mountains are gorgeous and anything outdoors is a sight to behold. Dani Canziani was kind enough to set up a weekend for me and even let me stay at her place! The great part was that this was the same weekend as the PGA Golf Tournament in Reno, and the incredibly beautiful, gentle, gorgeous, kind, giving, beautiful (ok enough sucking up) Dani Canziani got us tickets to see the tourney! I have always tried to pay attention to the energies of people when I am near anyone famous (the good kind of fame) as I believe it helps me learn to be a better person, and I was awed by Michelle Wie when I saw her. The way she held herself was inspiring, and I will never forget the directness of her movements. The weekend let me hang with Dani and Jeffrey, and I got a chance to get to know the local community a bit better. Sunday night we went to a show and saw Mad Hot Ballroom at the casino, and that one girl's feet were perfect! I have always admired anyone that has perfected their craft, and this girl's feet had me hypnotized throughout the show. Thanks a ton Dani, I will be back!

July 28, 2008I only get sick every once in awhile. Even while I was battling Cancer with chemotherapy, I have always been blessed with a strong constitution. This weekend was the Grand Prix of Swing in Kansas City. It's a great event, and anyone in the middle of the country should attend this very friendly and inviting weekend. Bob Tunison and the entire gang put on a fun weekend with plenty of dancing and very little drama (my favorite kind of event) was to be found anywhere. The only problem was my getting sick the day before I flew to KC…everyone was very nice and allowed me to get to bed early on Friday (I even had the shakes…bleh) which allowed me to recover somewhat. Thanks to Jess Acker and Stacy Vainiunas for mothering me and forcing me to eat because I felt better by Saturday. Sunday I was almost out of the bad stuff and actually started dancing again. Thanks to everyone in KC for a fun weekend, I promise I'll be healthy next year!

July 20, 2008Miami, FL. Is the home of a great many Cubans! It's always refreshing to step off the plane and hear your native Spanish being spoken all over the place. Debra Lynn put together a first rate event for her first year, and did an outstanding job on the weekend. Miami Dance Magic will continue for years to come, bringing WCS to South Florida once again. I hadn't been there in quite some years, and it was nice to see old friends from my UCWDC days as well as visit with family from outside the dance. Especially memorable was watching Billy Fajardo's jazz hands…I will never forget! If you ever see Billy, please make a point to call him "Jazz Hands Fajardo" as that will from now on be his new stage name. God help him if I ever get the MC's microphone while he's in the room. Seriously, it was great to see both Billy and Katie Marlow over the weekend and get to know them both a bit better. We have known each other for years, yet always in different circles. Hopefully that will change in the near future. Great job on the event Debra, and I hope to see you there next year!

July 7, 20084th of July means only one thing if you're part of the WCS community these days…it's time for another trip to Phoenix for their annual convention. GPSDC again has made this a spectacular weekend for all. Considering that the event doesn't have any of the routine divisions, it allows all of the "pros" a chance to relax at the pool and enjoy themselves without having to worry about competition. I hadn't spent much time at the pool in recent years, and it certainly hasn't changed much since I did. Lots of drinking and partying at all hours day and night! It was nice getting to know Mana DeSousa and as always the Maven's cabana was the scene of many, many crimes. If you haven't been to Phoenix in July (why would you, really) you should make the trip. Remember, it's a dry heat (much like a convection oven is a dry heat)…yeah right. www.gpsdc.com

June 29, 2008SHOW ME!!! St. Louis, Mo. Has been one of the breeding grounds for incredible swing dancing since I started back in the mid 80's (wow does that ever feel like a long time) and it still proves to be a heckuva place to go dance. Cory Johnson and the Rebels club put on some workshops and man oh man did I have a blast! Thanks to Jennifer Vaughn for putting me up (or is it putting up with me) over the weekend…wonderful hospitality in a beautiful home. Jennifer owns one of the premier salons in St. Louis and she treated me to a massage at the spa! WOW, did that ever rock! Friday and Saturday nights I was able to see some dear friends that I don't get a chance to see as often as I should. Seeing the old St. Louis gang brings back a wave of memories and emotions that go back over 20 years. To Val, Star, Missy (yeah I know it's Melissa now), Papa Joe, Momma Helen, Angie, and the rest of the gang, thank you thank you thank you. Over the years you guys have always been there for me, and during these tough times you guys have once again proven how dear your friendship is…you guys really are family. www.stlrebels.com

June 22, 2008This was supposed to be the weekend of the Liberty Swing Championships in Newark. Due to hotel problems, John Lindo (the incredible event director) decided to hold a smaller workshop weekend. Boy what a blast! John has a wonderful core group of volunteers and the whole gang really couldn't be nicer. Man, what a difference when joyful people put on an event. It was a great crowd, and workshops were offered Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I had the honor of dancing several hustles with Ms. Keri and boy can that lady dance! It was also a chance on Sunday to teach with John Lindo and Robert Cordoba. I'm honored to teach with two of the best in the business, and you should never skip the chance to take one of their classes if they're in your area. Come to think of it, they'll be in Houston for ACC in January…(hint hint hint) Thanks Robert for the move!

June 8, 2008Syracuse was the trip this weekend, and boy was it full of workshops. Maria Cirino did an excellent job once again (as always) putting together the weekend for all. One of the most interesting things about doing this for a living is watching the titles event promoters come up with for the various classes. This year, Maria decided to name all the classes after songs (You Can't Touch This, Vogue, Walk This Way, and Flashlight were among the titles) and it really cracked me up. My favorite was "I like to move it, move it"…it reminded me of the King in Madagascar. I have to say Maria is truly one of the keepers of the dance. Her tireless efforts with workshops, her event in Buffalo (Swing Niagara in September) and the regional dance community in upstate New York have produced many wonderful dancers over the years. Maria really is one of the best…

May 26, 2008Again I found myself during Memorial Day weekend in Atlanta for the Grand Nationals. Charlie and Jackie have always done a wonderful job mixing WCS and Shag into a great weekend full of competitions and plenty of partying. This year certainly was no exception. Kudo's always should go out to Linda Bellflower without whom I don't think the event would run. This lady really has everything together. She puts together an MC book full of all announcements/events/sponsors and it really makes the MC job MUCH easier. It's nice to head over to Shagland and see some dear friends I've made over the years. I don't get as much of a chance to travel east to their neck of the woods as I used to, so it's always a wonderful weekend.

May 18, 2008If I ever move from Houston, I still think Chicago would be the place. My yearly intensive trip to Chicago was as pleasant as ever. Friday I got to see my hero Ron Oberman and his lovely bride Tobi. Never have I seen a nicer couple, period. This year I insisted on going out to dinner Saturday night, and several of us went for a quiet dinner and visit on Saturday night. BJ, Julie, Ingrid, Jim, Donnie and I had a wonderful visit over dinner followed by a movie back at Jim and Ingrid's house. Usually on trips I don't have much chance to catch up with my friends due to my work schedule, and this was a night I'll treasure for a long while. It occurred to me that we hadn't gone out to dinner as a group since my first visit to Chicago 15 years ago when we took over Dick's Last Resort. Thanks as always to Jim and Ingrid for putting me up in their lovely home; to Julie and BJ for working as hard as they do to make these weekends happen; and Donnie for the transportation service he has always provided so graciously. Chicago is fortunate to have the dance community it has…I can't wait to come back for Chicagoland.

May 11, 2008SCOTLAND BABY YEAH!!! I just finished teaching at the Blaze 3 weekend in Ayr, Scotland. What a welcoming and friendly crowd! I can't get over how friendly everyone was throughout the weekend. I had the chance to make some new friends and even learned how to "Strip the Willow"…! Get your mind out of the gutter, it's a Scottish folk dance that had me skipping across the entire dance floor on Saturday night. My thanks go out to Franck and Sheena for putting together a wonderful weekend, and for inviting us all the way to Scotland. I'd also like to thank Dave Whitehead for initially setting up the opportunity for me to head over to teach. Monday found us sightseeing in Edinburgh, and I have to thank Yliander and Mel for joining us and showing us around the city. Edinburgh castle and the Royal Mile are beautiful places to visit, and it's the first city with a soundtrack as we were constantly within earshot of bagpipes...YES BAGPIPES! I did my civic duty and bought souvenirs for the boys along with several things for the house to remind me of how wonderful the people and places are in Scotland. I hope next year to make it back and even play St. Andrews with my dad. I'd like to send out a shout to Mike and Marion along with Dave, Ellen, Di, and Jennifer for making it out over the weekend. It was nice to see familiar faces from my London trip over the weekend. I actually taught a class for both Ceroc and WCS and had a blast in the process. My Ceroc is improving, and I might actually be able to stop thinking soon and just dance. Thanks again to everyone at Blaze for a wonderful weekend.

May 4, 2008This weekend it was back up to Enfield for Ken Mercik's first weekend event…Swing Into Spring. Ken has a great concept…pure social dancing at night. All of the competitions are held in the afternoon in order to allow for social dancing from about 9pm until everyone goes to bed. I thought he did a great job over the weekend, although the Hotel gave more than a few problems. Ken did his best to make sure the hotel problems were minimized, and I think he made a good weekend happen. I look forward to heading back next year as this event has the same feel as the Novice Invitational I used to host back home in Houston. If you're new to competition and want to be in a friendly atmosphere where the staff actually dances with everyone and is approachable, then you should join us next year. www.djkenm.com

April 25, 2008I had not been to Tulsa in many years. I have very fond memories of Tulsa, and I spent quite a bit of time up there when I first started dancing. The Tulsa Invitational competition was one of the biggest events in the region (I competed there in 1986) and it was the birthplace of the infamous "Living In America" routine with Gary Long. Stepping into the clubhouse on Saturday night brought back a flood of memories and names I hadn't thought of in a very long time. Jeanne DeGuyter did a great job setting up the weekend and my thanks go out to her for giving me a chance to head back up there to see everyone and flood myself with fond memories from way back when. Especially nice was seeing Earl and Lisa Strom, I hadn't had a chance to see them in a several years since they lived in Florida. Being in OKC now, they made it over for the weekend and I really enjoyed getting a chance to catch up with them. Thanks also to Don Law for putting me up in his house over the weekend. You gotta love a guy with 2 recliners and a big screen tv…

April 4, 2008It was time for my yearly trek to Enfield, CT for an intensive with Ken Mercik. His intensive weekends are always packed and his dances are full in the evenings. I enjoyed getting to know some of the Boston crowd a bit better, and had great fun dancing with everyone on Friday and Saturday night. Ken gave me a chance to spin some music on Saturday night and it's always fun to see if I can still get the crowd on their feet and up on the dance floor. Thanks to Tommy G for indulging me and letting me jump in to spin for a little while. Big hugs to the gang up at the Polish Hall…you know who you are. I look forward to seeing you in a month at Ken's first full weekend event. www.djkenm.com

March 28, 200825 years is a very long time…very long time indeed. This weekend I hosted (probably for the last time) the 25th annual Novice Invitational competition in Houston. This weekend was conceived to promote the "baby" dancers and give them a chance to compete without having to share the stage with more advanced dancers. Gilbert Huron (probably the most famous of all Whip dancers) came up with the weekend and came to join us Saturday night where he received an award for his contributions to the convention. If you ever get a chance to watch Gilbert and his lovely wife Trish dance, by all means take advantage of it. Gilbert and Trish are 8 time Texas State champions and they personify Whip dancing. I'm afraid the art of Whip is fading away, so I take advantage of watching them whenever possible. Thanks to both of you for what you have done to perpetuate the dance in Houston, Texas, and for me personally.

March 21, 2008It's hard to believe that I've been dancing this long and I still haven't been to all of the conventions. This weekend was my first foray to Seattle's Easter Swing convention, and I was very impressed with the entire setup. This convention actually sets up private lessons for the staff at a central location, which worked out pretty well. Any lessons are posted on a board near the main door, and you check it periodically to see if you have gotten any lessons. It was also great to see my sis Kelly Casanova this weekend, although with both of us working there wasn't much chance to visit. Congratulations to Jim Minty and his staff for a well run event. I headed home early on Sunday in order to spend Easter with my boys, and I look forward to attending next year. www.seattlewcswing.com

March 14, 2008LONDON ENGLAND BABY!!! My first trip to Europe and boy was I impressed. The dance level across the pond is MUCH better than I anticipated, and I see some very accomplished dancers over here. It is always fun meeting new people and seeing new places. Thanks to Paul Buckley and his lovely wife Sue for setting this up and letting me come play for the weekend. If you are ever in the London area, you have to go check out New Lodge for some dancing. Monday I had a chance to go visit my friend Mike Rosa (who was responsible for setting this up) in the hospital and I wish him a very speedy recovery. Carron, Richard, Paul, Sue, Sam and I went sightseeing on Monday after seeing Mike and Marion at the hospital…talk about a whirlwind trip of sightseeing. In one day, we managed to go see more than I thought we would be able to manage. I give VERY special thanks to Richard who is a walking history book when it comes to London for showing us around his most beautiful city. Monday we actually went back to see some more, and then went Ceroc dancing in the evening. The crowd is most welcoming and friendly, and I heartily recommend heading to London to anyone I see. Cheers!

March 7, 2008For a great many years Kelly Casanova has been part of my family. I had the chance to once again head west to work for Kelly this weekend. She and her husband Bob are both a pleasure to be around, and this weekend was no exception. Bob and I always have some running bet on sports and it doesn't feel at all like work when I head out here for the weekend. This trip I was fortunate enough to teach a beginner class…something I rarely get to do anymore. I've always preferred teaching beginners due to their eagerness to learn and I get great joy from seeing people that have never danced get out there and strut their stuff for the first time. Thanks to everyone at Bay West Ballroom for a fun Friday night as well, and I hope to make it back out west very soon.

Sunday March 2, 2008Dallas has always been a second home to me. It’s hard to believe I lived here over 20 years ago…it seems like last week. Gary Long, who I openly admit taught me how to teach, was a most gracious host along with his lovely bride Karen. They arranged a last minute intensive over the weekend, and gave me the opportunity to head north in Hemilina and play in big D. Saturday night had some great dancing at Texas Classic Push Clubs dance at Sandunga’s Dance Studio http://www.texasclassic.com/ . Be sure to check out the pictures from the evening. I danced quite a bit, and had the pleasure of dancing with one of my favorite partners of all time…Rose Marie Mallady. I can’t say enough about Rose. She was one of my inspirations when I started, and remains an inspiration today. Every time I dance with Rose, I get to do all the Push Dancing I want and I feel like I’m 16 years old again at the Lamp Post. I’ll dance with you anytime Rose, and I wish everyone had the chance to dance with you. My father and I have a saying…if you want to see if a pattern is leadable, try it with Rose. If she can’t follow it, then it isn’t leadable. There were quite a few dear friends at the dance, and I send out great big hugs to Robin McBride, Cher Peadon (the BEST partner I could ever hope for), Claudia Buhrig, Kerry and Alicia Turner, and my brother Bradford Sammus. Oh, I can’t forget the Jellyman. I really wish there were more weekends for me to come play up here…

Sunday February 24, 2008Da Dance Camp…Chicago…now we all know how much I love Chicago. I have a confession…Ron Oberman is my hero. This weekend I actually got a chance to watch Ron throughout the weekend. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen the man NOT having a good time. He cheers on every single competitor, and is always (and I mean ALWAYS) there to help out with any and everything needed. The world needs more Ron Obermans. The weekend was refreshing in that it actually promotes new dancers and does a wonderful job of making dancing approachable. All the teachers I saw were very open and available to students, and there was an air of genuine concern for teaching. I applaud Stephanie Kusibab and all the rest of the Swing and Country http://www.swingncountry.org/ staff for a well run weekend. Congratulations also to Stephanie for this being the 10th year of a wonderful idea. Many great dancers from the Chicago area got their start at Da Dance Camp, and quite a few make it a point to attend in order to give back. Way to go guys…and really Ron Oberman is my hero…OOH LA LA!

Sunday February 17, 2008On a plane once again…this time I’m headed home from Sacramento, California. Dani Canziani and her committee and volunteers put together yet another wonderful Capital Swing Dancer’s convention. Combining top level competitions, workshops, plenty of social dancing, and a wonderfully friendly atmosphere has become second nature here apparently. Although I don’t head out to the west coast as often as I used to, I’m very happy to come to this event. I’d like to send out a shout to the Evil Maven’s…much love there. I’d also like to send a salute to the powers that be over the weekend, for standing up in favor of actual dancing (it is after all called STRICTLY SWING) as opposed to the idiocy that has all too often been rewarded in this industry. The behavior of certain individuals during the first round of the Champions Strictly Swing division was insulting to those that actually desire and try to earn their way into the final rounds, and I for one am proud that the line was drawn to discourage people from assuming they will automatically progress to the final round based on name rather than talent. This type of behavior is hardly professional, and should never be rewarded. In my humble opinion, we can never expect to be taken seriously if we don’t take ourselves seriously first. Perhaps the winds of change are actually present, and we are headed toward an era of dance first, clowning second…I can’t wait.

Sunday January 27, 2008I'm sitting on the airplane on my way home from Newark, NJ. John Lindo was kind enough to set up an intensive weekend for me at the Nash Ballroom. In all my travels, the Nash has to be the best dance facility I've encountered; plenty of room, great floors, and an extremely professional staff make it a wonderful location. Saturday night we all went to dinner to get away from dancing. It was refreshing to see such a close-knit group of people getting along away from the dance. John is blessed to have a core group of individuals that truly like each other's company regardless of the setting. Thanks to John and company for letting me share that family atmosphere even if only for the weekend. Special thanks to Kim and Allison for all the hard work they do helping John get things ready. I'm looking forward to staying home next weekend for the Super Bowl. After that, I'll be hitting the road pretty hard for the next few months.

Tuesday January 15, 2008Another year and another Americas' Classic Championships has come and gone. This year we had record crowds, records competition entries, and record fun. Being our first year as an official NASDE event, ACC was being watched and we really came through with flying colors. At the risk of sounding biased, I really have to say that the staff at ACC has to be the best in the country, starting with our professionals who ACTUALLY DANCE with our customers to the registration staff putting in 18 hour days with nothing but smiles all the way to the volunteer staff that goes WAY beyond the call of duty to ensure everyone and everything gets taken care of. I am blessed to have these individuals in my life and as a part of my business. I have to send out the most special of all Thank You's to my partner, Cher Peadon. She is truly the reason this event succeeds. Her tireless dedication to the dance and the dancers is evident in everything she does year round for this event. Thanks Chata for believing in me and seeing our vision of what a dance event should be. Congratulations to all the winners this year, especially those that won the AANCE tour. With 18 events so far, it will keep growing for sure. I have always believed this dance lives through the novices rather than the pros, and seeing the faces of the AANCE winners proves to me that we are doing something right.

Sunday December 2, 2007So I'm flying home on an expressjet from Cincinnati. Mike Andreyko put together a very enjoyable weekend of workshops and dancing. It was nice to see Jason and Sophy Saturday night. To Sophy and Danelle, thank you both for dancing with me in the exhibitions. All in all, a fun weekend where new friends were made and old friends were visited. If you're ever in the Cinci area, be sure to look up Mike and the club. Thanks also to Freddy for coming down from Columbus to DJ both nights.

Sunday November 11, 2007I'm sitting at Logan Airport waiting to board my plane home after Swinging New England. I have to send major props to Neil Klein and Willow Colson-Wall for putting together a VERY friendly event. Plenty of social dancing in a relaxed atmosphere always make for a very enjoyable weekend. I have to say the best thing about the weekend was Saturday night. The bookends competition is…memorable…let's say I now know more about Kevin St Laurent and Marty Klempner than I ever wanted to know. But that's not the best part. After all the competitions were over, Peter Strom DJ'd a "crossover" set in the lindy room. Not a single "BOOM BOOM BOOM" song in the mix…imagine actual swing music for hours on end. I hardly stopped dancing for almost 4 hours…really. I have long thought the music was missing something. I now know that I've rediscovered my passion for dancing, and that much of my weariness rested with the music. I hear Peter and a few others are having a party in Atlanta a few weeks from now…I think I may actually go check it out www.swingandsoul.com

Wednesday October 31, 2007I have just been informed that Craig Hutchinson has passed away. One of the true legends of dance is gone. Craig was INSTRUMENTAL in building West Coast Swing not only in the Washington DC area, but throughout the Northeast. Back in 1989, it was Craig along with Margaret Batichuk from NYC that brought us WCS teachers out to the East coast. Prior to that time, there were small pockets of relatively unorganized dancing east of the Mississippi river. Keep that in mind next time you attend Liberty, VSO, Summer Hummer, Swingin New England, or any event on the east coast. His book "Swing Dancer" illustrates countless variations on footwork and pattern and transcends time…it is as useful today as ever for those willing to study its detail. Personally, Craig was a mentor who always took time to help students and peers alike. It was Craig that wrote one of the scoring programs used at most dance events to this day. He founded the Potomac Swing Dance Society, and taught in the DC area for over 40 years. I am honored to have known him, and will remember him fondly. The dance world has lost one of its greatest sources of knowledge and wisdom…

Monday October 29, 2007I said it before, Chicago is MY KIND OF TOWN! Julie Hein and Maren Oslac have put together one of the friendliest events I have ever attended (after 24 years that's saying something) during my time on the road. A weekend with plenty of general dancing, workshops for Beginners as well and higher levels (Beginner's track of workshops is a brilliant idea) and the All-Star Hour for charity were pure genius. Add to that a DJ Challenge and costume contest for Halloween and you get one heck of a weekend. Big Hugs go out to Julie, Maren, BJ, Tobi and the rest of the Chi-Town crew. I will see you all in January for University of Mario (Holy Cow 15 years of traveling to Chicago). For more info go to marioinchicago.com

Sunday October 14, 2007Few events across the country hold themselves accountable for maintaining a fair and balanced playing field for their competitions based on actual dancing rather than tricks. Still fewer events believe that the top "pros" should be held MORE accountable than beginners. I would like to applaud Boogie By The Bay, Andy Bouman, Beth Bellamy, and especially Kelly Casanova for their actions over the weekend in San Francisco. For far too long, many "pros" have believed themselves beyond reproach for the rules, thinking that as the "elite" they are justified in acting as they please in meetings and competitions. Boogie decided to draw the line and finally declared that many of the antics have gone too far, and they have my full support in their decision. After all, if these people are indeed the best, shouldn't they be able to dance our dance better than anyone else and not have to rely on acrobatics and clowning in order to hit things in the music? It's not like they haven't heard these songs before…it's not like they won't hear them again next week at another convention. I can assure you that like Boogie By The Bay, Americas' Classic Championships believes in swing dancing. Big Huge Thumbs Up to Boogie, and may you continue to fight the good fight. I'll continue to work for you as long as you'll have me.
Dallas has always been my second home. Thanks to Robin McBride, Robert Nelson and the rest of the gang at Texas Classic Push Club for putting together a great day of workshops followed by a fun dance in Fort Worth. Eric Montes came out and it was good to see him and catch up. Texas Classic holds lessons every Wednesday night at Sandunga Dance Studios. If you're ever in big D on a Wednesday night, go check them out!

Tuesday October 2, 2007Maria Cirino has become quite the event director. Swing Niagara, now in it's 4th year, has become quite the event. With top staff, plenty of workshops in several dances, and competitions for all levels, Swing Niagara has become a very well attended event in Buffalo. It's always refreshing to be at a laid back event with plenty of social dancing. Special thanks to Connie for dancing with me in the Pro-Am…I'll dance with you anytime. I'd also like to wish Dave and Shelley all the best at their wedding this coming weekend. It's always great to see two wonderful people that deserve the best in life. Canada was certainly in da house, eh! And let's not forget about the Tribal Belly Dancing. I can see the jack and jill contests already…

Tuesday September 25, 200740 isn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be, probably because I was finally able to buy the truck I've been wanting for over 15 years. That's right, yours truly is now the owner of a brand new 2007 Dodge Ram Quad Cab with a Hemi! Man, is it ever nice to have an engine again!!!!
Last weekend took me to the DC area for an intensive sponsored by Dean and Dawn Garrish. It had been a few years since I had been in the area, and it was nice to get back there and see some old friends. I started going to DC back in 1989, and it was great to see Dean, Dawn, Annie, Barb, Cam, Terry, Dan, Jim, Peggy and the others over the weekend. I hope to get back there more often because it's a great dance scene. If you're ever in the area, check out Dean and Dawn's dances on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Tuesday September 4, 2007Wow what a whirlwind the past two weeks have been…St. Louis for workshops then Dallas Dance! First off, St. Louis was like going home for me. I used to visit quite often when I competed with Val LaFemina back in the late 80's and early 90's and hadn't gone back for several years. I must say the entire community made me feel welcome and it was like a reunion for me to see so many great dancers from the good old days. Val LaFemina, Star Morris (the ONLY woman to ever spin at a 45 degree angle), Melissa (it'll always be Missy to me), Papa Joe, Mama Helen, Angie, Dale Rouggly, Elliot Silk, Bob Brown were among those that I saw. I didn't realize how much I missed being around those great spirits until I was able to be among them again. The entire St. Louis community was a blast and I danced the whole weekend away…really I did.
Dallas Dance has grown into one heck of a weekend. Well over a thousand in attendance from all corners of the world (France and Australia included) make this a definite event to attend. Terry Rippa and the entire volunteer staff put together a top-notch event. As event director for ACC, I'm extremely pleased to have this event as one of our qualifiers for the AANCE tour. My favorite dance of the weekend has to be with Rose Marie Mallady, one of the lady's that took me under her wing when I first started. She is the best pure follow I have ever had the pleasure to lead. My father and I used to say "to see if it's really leadable, try it with Rose…if she can't follow it, then it's not leadable." My induction to the Hall of Fame brought back a flood of memories after seeing the video compilation. To think I was 19 years old when I attended and won the first Dallas Dance in 1987…my how time flies. Thanks to Samantha for carrying me once again in the strictly…

Sunday August 19, 2007MY KIND OF TOWN…Chicago is. What a great weekend at the 20th Chicagoland Dance Festival. Randy and Jennifer Jeffries did a wonderful job as they do every year, and my northern family came out to play. BIG HUGS to my Chicago girls BJ and Julie! It certainly was great to see Donnie as well. Don MacDonald has to be the consummate Pro to dance with in competition. Congrats to Maren on winning the Classic challenge with Jason. Mona Broussard has to be one of the best DJ's in the country world and she lived up to it over the weekend. She always takes great care of both competitors and spectators alike. Rounding out old home week was the world renowned Dave Getty…I used to see the guy every other week and now it seems we're lucky to be in the same place once a year. I don't get to as many C&W events as I used to, and it's really nice to see all of my friends from that world. If you get a chance to attend next year, you won't be disappointed. Great dancing, plenty of workshops and competitions, and wonderful hosts and volunteers always eager to help make this a GREAT place to be.

Tuesday August 14, 2007Just got home from a GREAT weekend in Columbus at the Mid-Ohio Boogie Bash. This has to be one of my favorite stops of the year. Picture an entire weekend WITHOUT contests…just workshops during the day with a sit down dinner followed by a night of pure dance. What a blast! Thanks to Georgia Watson for inviting me again to this wonderful breath of fresh air. It was nice to see my twin brother Sam West along with his lovely wife Lisa (thanks for the dance) and the rest of the staff. Try some of Sam's chocolate! If you don't know what I'm talking about, you really need to find out…go see Sam.

Wednesday August 1, 2007Dance Houston was this past weekend, and it was enjoyable to be home for a change. Terry Hopkins did a great job as usual running the event and actually had awards early! Thanks to Samantha for Strictly, Debbie for Slow Whip, and my ProAms (Cher, Laura Jean, Vicky, Michelle, Suzanne, and Ann) for wonderful dances. As always, it was a pleasure dancing with all of you. Cher Peadon, Robert Cordoba, Deborah Szekely, Terry Roseborough, Kerry & Alisha Turner, Angel & Debbie Figueroa all came into town to dance and support our local community. Congratulations to Samantha Buckwalter for winning Top Teacher for the 2nd time in Houston. She is well on her way to becoming one of the best on the circuit. Robert Cordoba and Deborah Szekely are still in town and are teaching my group classes tonight which should be a special treat for my students.

Sunday July 15, 2007I just arrived at home after spending my weekend at the Grand Prix of Swing in Kansas City. I would like to thank the following ladies for honoring me on the Pro-Am floor - Sue, Lefty, Groupie, Stacie, and Ilona were an absolute pleasure to dance with. I was equally honored to have the opportunity to dance with the one and only Jessica Cox, one of the best in the business. Thanks to Stan and the rest of the organizers for a fun weekend. As always, KC was most welcoming to one and all throughout the course of our stay.

July 1st, 2007What a year! Healthy in June 2006, stage 4 cancer in August 2006, and now cancer free again as of March 2007. Facing your mortality really has a way of simplifying your life. What were once life and death issues are now petty problems and the priorities in my life have revealed themselves. There are not enough words to describe my gratitude to everyone that has given me encouragement and prayers and support over the last year. God has given me a second chance, and I don't intend to take it lightly.
As you can see, there have been a lot of changes to my website. New logo, new outlook, new merchandise and fresh ideas abound. Without revealing too much, let me just say that you are going want to check this website often. Special thanks to my absolute all-time favorite niece, Bam-Bam, for her tireless help in getting this all up and running. I would also like to thank The Groupie for all of her help. If it weren't for you two this project never would have happened.
