July 5, 2010Patrick Dickerson said it best…he described Phoenix as "walking on the Sun" and he's right. The Greater Phoenix Swing Dance Club held its' 29th annual 4th of July Convention. As one of the biggest clubs in the nation, GPSDC has had a large membership for many years. Cheryl Sullivan, President of the club put together a great staff and tackled the task of hosting the event for the first time. I must admit she did a wonderful job for a first timer. To be thrown in as the event director for one of the longest running WCS events is no easy task, and although there were a few foibles, they were minimal and quickly corrected. Congratulations Cheryl on putting together a great weekend. That goes for the rest of the board and the volunteers as well. I had a great time, despite the behavior of some "pros" during the Champions Strictly Swing. Some people believe "anything goes" means you don't have to do WCS and can run around the ballroom, behind the judges, and even fall on the ground. This is not entertainment in my opinion, but a crass display of lack of respect for the event, the attendees, and the dance itself. Lord knows I've made mistakes, and that I've pushed rules in my time, but to have that degree of disrespect for everyone around them, including their own friends, is something I find disgusting. The saddest part in all of this is the incredible talent these people possess. They have no need to go to such extremes and don't seem to grasp that their dance ability could stand on its own…without the need for all the "clowning" and making fun of literally everyone that has come before them. If they would only see that they don't have the need to do this. Thank you to Cheryl, Bess, and the rest of the club for a wonderful weekend. Despite the behavior of a few bad apples, I had a great time. It was great to see my old friends Rudy Paaz, Don and Rosalie Dressler, Mike Gallo, Danny and Joanie Gallichio and the rest of the Phoenix regulars. If you're ever in Phoenix, you owe it to yourself to check out the Greater Phoenix Swing Dance Club.
